Jeff-C-IL
Just pull the motor & tear it down. From those pics, clearly need to completely dissassemble the motor and check everything. You could have a cam problem. Could be bearings. Could just be antifreeze locking it (if the head was still on). Could be a couple gear teeth missing, slipping enough to lock up (my vote). You risk damaging something not-easily-fixable if you don't do a complete teardown & inspection. Best case you have to buy some new gaskets, and can reuse most everything else - and then you KNOW what shape the motor is in. Or you may find something bad enough it will let you know this project isn't worth it. 2
mmi
isnt this simply the M engine? still relatively $$ to do it right, just watch the foreign parts

T4 was like a H. TD6 was like a MD.

Pistons don't look bad, how are the sleeves? There was no metal in the oil when I drained it. The sleeves are pitted, I am going to replace them since I am this far. The #1 sleeve is loose...if I push forward hard liquid sgueezes out between it and the block.

Did you do an oil sample to determine no metal in oil?

ray54
If they are treated correctly with a lot of cool down time, gas start diesel heads are very prion to cracking. So check it closely. Careful with the sleeves as well, SIL was looking for a sleeve for a TD9 and having no luck finding any.

IH OAK
I have the engine loose and I got it out 1/4 inc but it won't move any more. I unbolted everything and it still won't come. What could be hanging up? I can't lift the front-it won't come up.

IH OAK
I got the engine out one inch and now the ring gear is sticking on the bell housing. I can't lift the back high enough. I've tried prying on the flywheel etc. and it doesn't help. I've loostened everything the manual says and also loostened the input shaft from the transmission just in case it was sticking and it didn't help. Amy suggestions? Thanks. IH OAK
I figure now would be a good time to just go ahead and post all my crappy pictures with commentary because I'm trying to use this thread as sort of a backup record in case I loose my written records (and Mom's gonna make do it anyhow) Intake off. Exhaust off Rockers off Thermostat off Head off Rusty cylinders Cleaned up some and turning over (note the burned spots on the head hinting at a bad gasket) Pitted piston Rad off Lifting on engine with a custom built spreader bar Cracked alternator mount Progress...right side ...left side ...top ...bottom ...Clutch Ring gear...left side ...right side Hope this helps. Sorry about the blurry/jittery pics...my camera is junk. Update: I have changed from a chain fall to a cherry picker to make the up/down easier. Thanks -OAK

rustred
dont think the spring is your problem at the moment. looks like you have that engine belly wrapped. but anyhow i have found you usually need the front a bit higher when sliding them out. have you stuck a 5 ft bar in there and tryed to pry it forward as they can get stuck and at times just needs an extra shove. even the clutch shaft could be rusty. i would have made a plate to fit over the head studs and do it that way. are you just on the rafters there? as you need the hoist to roll ahead also. The input shaft is completely free of the flywheel. I can't get a picture but I think I trust my fingers...the ring gear is catching. Most of the pics were before the switch to the rolling cherry picker/hoist.
