German D-179 pistons with only 3 ring grooves not 4

Recommended Posts

rebuilding a D-179 forktruck engine. IH dealer says they were only built with 4 ring groove pistons. This one only has 3. All dimensions are as printed in repair manuals and all crankshaft specs are consistent with manuals. Looking for std replacement rings. Any thoughts ?

A ring job isn't a rebuild.  Put new pistons and liners in, that's a rebuild.

As far as "standard" rings go, they come with new pistons.

yes it shows the current torque + type of bolts,(single use)?

but today we need to know (as many fail)if to also replace factory  bolts/studs and where to get them $ not $$$$

we dont know how far OP is into it....

I would add per above if sleeves /piston  check out and rings are bad, would seriously consider NEW hasting rings ONLY over a reliance kit........but would inspect those sleeves for cavitation and clean change the orings regardless

I agree.  But if you are going that far, not many more $$ to just replace them.  Labor is the same.  Easier to warranty new parts than just labor.  Hard to give a long guarantee on old parts.

Lots of d-179s built with three ring pistons you have to determine if the top ring is rectangular or keystone and then order the appropriate ring set  not a big deal
