IH 496 Disk. 19'1"

Recommended Posts

Been wanting a 20'-22' 485 or 496 disk for a while. 18' 496 showed up in the bargin bin and i snatched it out from the executioners gas axe. Was even tickled to see it sold new local in town but ended up in Denton TX. 260mi round trip and its back where it sold new. Smallwood-North Truck and Tractor took over Bob Singer in very late 70s or early 80s. Dealership only lasted for a few short years. Needs work like everything else I drag home.

8Busy day. Cut out worn section and Double walled the transport axle pivot section. Bought the updated wider axle clamps. Fixed one wing hinge.

That one should cut better than the wider ones, I'd think.

Looking at spec sheet, smallest 9" spacing was 19'1", 6750lbs. 355lbs per foot of cut but says 325lbs in brochure. In Texas blackland, wide spaced blades and alot of weight is the answer. 596s and 501s were more common than 485s and 496s.

It is so interesting to see how different some areas are.  I have never seen with my own eyes a 596 or 501.  “Most” IH disk here were 7” spacing to do finish tillage.  480’s and 490’s, 496’s everywhere.  Not many green ones.  They quickly fell out of favor in the 90’s.  Many farms don’t even have a disk anymore.  I do!  A 490.  It’s 20’ or 21’.  7” spacing and has a hitchhiker harrow.  If you drive 4-5mph is does a nice job.

Nice save!  You’ll like it!  I found a 24’ set that I cut down to the size I needed. Bought the gang bolts for a 19’ set, for the wings, cut the wing frame down and away to the races. Works well, nice and  level - wing wheels will drop into dead furrows the odd time and gouge things out some. Won’t leave things level there. Worth the time to resize it for me. I couldn’t find a unit that was 18/19 feet when I was looking

I would of guessed that disk to be 20' or wider by looking but it does fold up nice and narrow. I like it. Wish I owned it. I run a roached out JD bw disk. It was local and cheap, that's about all I can say. In the end it does a nice job finishing if you know how to set it up.

I like the disk, tractors, and pickup in all the pics!

Brian, I’m curious what all will you be doing to the disk to fix it up?

Transport axle has major wear due to jackassery and piss poor maintenance. The original axle supports are gone and a bent strap was used and wore into axle bad. Blades and bearing all seem good for now. It needs all new hoses. One wing hinge is broke and wing wheel and hub missing. Once i get hoses replaced i bet i find leaking nd blown hyd cyls too.

So basically a total rebuild is happening then?  But it will be worth it when done, they are a great disc, at least mine does everything I want!  Was worried about a ridged finish with narrower winds but turns out to works pretty good. Look forward to your rebuild progress!

oh, and your truck is pretty sweet!! Two thumbs up for the trailer hauler!!

I think I disked 1000's of acres with a 490 20' disk behind a turned up 1066. It was a very good disk but that transport axle was probably the weakest point. We replaced a few over the years. Dad was adamant that I had to stop a grease it often because of that.

They are a pain to get them to take grease.  The zerk is recessed where they mount to, and fills up with dirt and if not completely centered the grease gun nipple will not even go on the  zerk.    Going to put pipe nipples on ours to get zerks above frame to grease easier.
