1966 1200 Factory LP Flat bed.

Recommended Posts

In 1966 starting my Farming career , I watched my local Blacksmith / family friend , purchase this truck new and build the bed for it.

I was 21 no money trying to farm with old IH equipment that Herb the blacksmith kept repairing for me .

Saw Herb use this truck until he became ill and retired in the late nineties , passed in early 2000’s He willed it to grandson , few years later I bought it from grandson and put it in storage.

I kept it up and running but it’s very tired.

After consulting with IH parts of America in Grass Valley Ca. I hauled it to them yesterday .

they will do a complete refurbish and hopefully it will be a driver , and an addition to my IH tractor collection as their IH service truck.

I will post progress here as I take pictures and have updates.

for now pictures of it before restoration and on trailer to be delivered 231 miles North

Tony - Where's all the rust?  There's no dents!  Is it still "restoration" if there's no dents and rust?  About the worst thing I see is the seat.  And the LP tank needs a repaint.

It’s pretty clean but age has rendered everything unusable , IE; windows all need weather stripping , top of door glass I’d loosing its lament, gauges do not work, Heater controls no work , interior is filling with surface rust , floor needs blasting before it get bad , engine run decent but very low oil pressure , rear seal & front seal leak.Brakes are iffy at best , 4speed tranny is so wore out you have to search for gears

body paint look good from afar but far from good , lot of chips and pealing, rust taking over bad spots. door weather strips basically gone . Door latches and window latches are so wore you think they going to fall off . Lol

I am hoping to refresh engine , blast cab and repaint along with interior , change from snap ring front rims , clean up bed and hoist , perhaps add tool boxes under bed in front of rears .

I want a daily driver that I can use with my tractor collection. Add brake booster.

Hope I can achieve it and still leave the original purpose look . The lift I want left on.

The propane tank I want to do a pin striping of the late blacksmith logo as a tribute to the man who had it and I watched build that bed on it in 1967 and helped me so much in my early farming career keeping my junk going .

if anyone can achieve what I want with this it’s the guys doing it , they specialize in IH

known as IH parts of America in Grass Valley , Ca. About four hour north of me.

Btw they are the ones that bought out Binder Books from Oregon about a year and half ago.

Re:  Grass Valley,  California

That's gonna be one great looking truck when finished------the L-P tank will set it off.

In my great uncle's (1851--1855) diary-----he mentions my great grandaddy going up to Grass Valley several times while they were out there in the gold fields.

Post us some pictures of Grass Valley when you are back up that way------and keep us posted on the little flat bed.👍

edit:   their camp was near Mormon Bar (Island)??---------now in Folsum Lake not far northeast of Folsum Dam.

This project is moving slow .

Between Power outages last fall and now Covid -19 is slowing all vendors etc.

Then add the fact that their main guy broke his arm.

I have spoken to painters and they have it scheduled .

A case of hurry up and wait !   Its still very much in the process and should be front line here shortly.

Hey Guys ! Here is my flatbed blacksmith truck that TroyDairy said was MIA .

Now that Red Binder is finished and home , Ill be focusing on Herb a little more , I want to get a personalized lic. plate of either Herb or Herbie as Herb was the name of former owner.

Its been a slow go so far as I.H. parts America is very busy with their Scout business.

Its been stripped , much body work done as even though it looked clean of rust ,it had damage,  It had a factory 304 on L.P. rather then rebuild the 304 we are rebuilding a I.H. 392 and plan on running on L.P.  Four speed tranny was totally wore out so we are rebuilding a 5 speed overdrive. We are changing out axles to accommodated disk brakes and power steering. Also adding Air conditioning

We plan to refurbish bed but not change structure as to have Herb's look from back , refurbish lift , side boards , propane tank , probably add couple of nice tool boxes under each side.

Pictures will be slower in coming as they are 3 hours North so I have to depend on them sending to me . I have visited there three times so far and plan many more but not weekly as I did with Red Binder.

Dirtboyz and I visited there last week and I hope I can get recent  pictures to here from his Ipad.

These batch of pictures are from the early tear down and cab going to blaster. I will post more of cab rust repairs etc . did not want to overwhelm this post .lol

This was primary Cab repairs  Rocker panels rusted and passenger side floor rusted through. The red Binder had the very same damage and it was an Arizona truck and this truck lived most its life 7 miles from me in Hot Central Cal. and might of traveled Southern Cal but doubt it left state and ever saw Snow.

The vent in dash were rusty both trucks.

BTW , There is Copper on those old IH radiator  tanks that will buff out beautiful !

That is my 392 and heads on counter.

   Few pic's,

Random pictures of after rust repairs and rough fitting

That bumper is the original ,it was painted white but so good condition that we were able to chrome it.

Last picture is cab headed to paint shop for final prep and sanding.

While at paint shop its been found that Hood hinge brackets were pretty bad damaged from rust so I had to replace the hood.

the last batch of pictures are of IHPA shop and all the Scout projects going on and out side pics trying to capture all spare parts they have on grounds , all neatly arranged .

Very cool project Tony. Do you have a picture of Herb’s blacksmith emblem?  Putting that on the LP tank will be a killer addition in my opinion.

I understand your thinking Ryan.! I would agree if it was as nice as it looks .
However , She looks GOOD FROM AFAR BUT FAR FROM GOOD .

it was repainted in its previous life, paint was thick with many chips and peel with rust spreading under. Hood hinge pads was destroyed by rust and I had to replace hood.

A trusted mechanic and I went through it with a fine tooth comb , we had it running and driving but it was just plain old and tired. Engine leaking both seals , 2 lbs oil pressure , four speed had to fish for gears ,

brakes typical IH just about none functional , inside cab was being attacked by surface rust , gauges , vents not working .
besides hood , we are having to replace corners behind dash board, at vent , outlet, and passenger floor replaced due to rust and pin holes.

Being I am not a big Patina Fan and my purpose to restore is to make it at least as good as new or better and preserve it for future generations While honoring our local Blacksmith and his family, it needs to be all or nothing .

At my current age , I have a shrinking window to restoring this to a respectable lasting level which hopefully will give  it another 55 years of life and that opportunity is now.

i am hoping that when I can’t do this anymore I can sip a glass of wine and know that I did all I could at the time and have no SHOULDA regrets .
