4130 skid steer repower. What to look for in an engine? Shipped with Onan gasoline.

Recommended Posts

This is my first skid steer. The Onan LP gas engine is dead, but the machines bones look good. So if I can repower it, I'll be thrilled! I'm hoping to put a small (2 or 3 cylinder 1 to 1.5 liter range) diesel or Turbo diesel in this, but haven't ruled out anything at this point.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what they would use? The Onan was approx 1 liter and 22 to 25hp.

Kubota if you want diesel. Any Diesel in the smaller size is harder to find than a gas, might need to find a lawnmower to part out to get one

Those onan engine I thought were good? Is it overhaul able?

Isn't an Onan air cooled? So if you go diesel you have engineer a radiator.

I figured it could go up behind my head near the hydraulic radiator.

One thing that I also had considered is a Yanmar 10hp air cooled diesel. Torque is better than a 10hp gas and could add a small Turbo and/or other mods if it another 5hp was all it needed. Maybe optimistic.

There's also a Facebook group for them under Hydro Mac.

I'd got with a Kohler or a Vanguard repower.  Putting a liquid cooled diesel in it would be a pretty big job.

I would go with a late model small electronic car engine.  I could see the Nissan 1.6 ltr 105 hp 4 cyl from a 2013 Versa car. All aluminum,  probably weighs in at less than 300#. I have owned one new since 2013.  It has proven to be a very good engine and commonly used world wide in Nissan and Renault small cars. You could have the only skid steer around with EFI, VVT and DOHC. This is not a joke, quiet as a mouse, vibration free engine and since there is no mechanical drive train in a skid-steer a hydraulic pump mounted on the front could supply power.  The radiator is a little larger than  the  heater core on K2500 454 Suburban.

should be a nhc  engine there will be some numbers after that that will tell you all the specs of that engine I don't know what you mean when you say it is dead does it crank have spark the nhc was one of the better engines that onan made I was a dealer for them years ago the big problem they had with was the coil and the starter otherwise they were a good air cooled engine

It was purchased in pieces and is an LP gas engine. I figure getting the gas carb would be expensive and a gamble since I don't know the history. Also has a cracked intake Manifold. After reading the IH vs Onan lawsuit docs, that also shook my confidence in the engine. May be a fine engine. I don't have experience with Onan to have an opinion.

Ended up getting a Lombardini FOCS diesel 1 liter 3 cylinder. It should have the right power and torque for this machine, however it will be just a little bit too long.

This means:

1. Door will have to be moved out by 6-8" and body have lips welded on.

2. Door will have to have lips welded on.

I'm thinking I will go with the first option. The radiator will have to be mounted somewhere (not sure where yet) and will have an electric cooling fan. Not too big a deal on this. I will have to put plexi at the rear of the cage for when there's a radiator problem.

Nice find those are work horses! I love those. If you have Facebook you could join my group B/c those came with the  Onan NHCV motor I'd consider keeping it too sell parts off of b/c they are so hard to find & you could make some good $$$ from it. All about Hydra-mac, Gehl & IH Skid loaders. https://www.facebook.com/groups/HydraMac

There is a website i know of that Offers Re-Power units for those Older machines I gotta find it now.

Too bad you already made your choice. I was going to suggest a Predator 670.

That was what I was going to do but the fan blows the heat into the cab opposite the onan. That and HF didn't have them on sale. Found the diesel for about the same price. Going to be a little more work... but hopefully worth it in the end.
