Thank you for posting that. Didn’t know there was a #12. All I’ve seen of a #9 is a short clip from a promo film and a couple other pics.

Yes ! That is one like we had.

Raked lot of hay ,oats, Black eye beans with it  hooked to a 300 Utility.

If I came across one already restored or in mint condition ,I would consider it.

         Tony

Tony, I’m afraid if I give you and exSW my location you may be coming out to my area to get the #9 my neighbor has?

Still waiting on gear box , as the larger bearings with snap rings in center of carrier had to be ordered , they arrived yesterday ,now up to machine shop.

Kaman bearing asked ,"what are these out of and what age " ?  Said , "don't see these around much any more ". Two of them had snap ring on center of carrier and most had I.H. # with ST and three #'s only.

John an I worked on knotter system, evaluated parts and condition and wear  , on all three, to find the best to make one.

Need to bush knotter clutch plate and have new clutch pad made.

Lot of roll pins to remove , gears to free up , however , this particular knotter seems to have " In tolerance " wear on most parts.  Springs were bad on trip dog and roller was stuck , as were all other rollers on this baler .lol

The wire knives need polishing two we'll sharpen and should be like new third we need to replace with a better one from other.

  Few pics

   Tony

BTW those bearing in pic are what I ordered , Your looking at 520.00 dollars there. OUCH

Amazing build. Did they all have the horse trailer ball hitch or was that something added?

No they had a basic two lip .

However, most new small squares out here come with ball hitch and most commercial guys changed older ones to ball because more secure hitch less bouncing around.

In my case , Tulare show is 60 miles south of me , If I decide to tow it behind pick up this will work better.

Along this line is tires and wheels ,  Original was used aircraft tire and snap ring rim on heavy side and regular implement rim on lite side. Even the aircraft sales place would not touch the old snap ring rim. lol.

I am going with these new rims and used aircraft tires on both sides., So if I decide to tow it I should not have any blow outs. lol.

     Today we tackled knotters !

Decided they had to be all taken apart blasted and checked for wire wear  and all wear areas had to be filled and reserviced or just polished to smooth.

We spent much of time evaluating each piece of knotters.

The other part of our time was  Also , reconsidering going to propane , after assessing all , I am afraid it may change to much of original look.

Even though commercial operators in the day did put their balers on propane, This particular brand and model were very few made , so , to alter with aftermarket products may defeat what I am trying to preserve which is the very few made #71 I.H. baler , that very few have seen.

So at this point the argument is for maintaining it on gas as it was.

Now its my recommendation that at the completion of this project that a ceremony be held to commemorate  the blessings of all the hard work that went into this project, after all the kind word s have been spoken,  to break a bottle of Justin’s isosceles over the ram by the lady of the house as A fitting conclusion. Amen ?

Press ahead ??
Make some hay ??

560 Dennis,

Thank you !  Your choice  Justin's Isosceles, is impeccable and I am thinking that we should have a Mid progress Baptism with Isosceles pre finish ! lol lol

Its certainly been a challenge at times .  But one step at time ,  We think we have chamber, plunger , gear boxes all going good.  Now we get knotters cleaned up and work done to them as needed ,  Next, engine rebuilt,  the pick up reel is still intact have not figured how to tackle it , have three of them and two are pretty bad.

I hear you , cheers

If you want to celebrate Mid progress do so !
My thoughts

I don’t think Americans celebrate the completing of the hard work that goes into any projects. We go on to ,THE WHATS NEXT , After all they deserve it . Despite all the set backs ,frustrating issues that happen there still something warranted ,it’s celebrate ?

Ours was gas .

Most on propane that I remember were  New Holland 290's,  Freeman 330's, Oliver's of same vintage.

The jury is still out but everything I have mocked up for propane ,changes the look of this machine more then I like and being most people have never seen a  Yellow I.H. #71 three wire baler with Wisc. engine , I need to keep it as original as possible.
