Tonyinca
Guys , Forgot to point out above, Notice in last set of pictures ,above, the overcast , looking like a bit of fog ? That is smoke obscuring the sun, now for over a week, from the Creek Fire , Which includes Huntington Lake and Shaver Lake , Approximately 60 miles East of here in Sierra's Thank God ,Its high enough that we don,t smell smoke ,per Se', but air is kind pungent at times, except certain times in evening when air gets heavier then smoke smell is evident. I hope so , Sledgehammer, I am ready to turn corner, not find more rust scale needing chipped off and blasted, There is no more two pieces that touch , that have not been taken apart blasted , every bearing ,shaft and bushing has been replaced and delt with, anything that was bent or not looking right has been replaced. BUT I am sure we'll find more .lol. I think it is far from Smithsonian , but thank you for the compliment. Yes, John and I smile a lot out here , We get tired , filthy, Hot , but love every minute and are getting excited about seeing paint. John is a retired Farmer / Commercial hay work. While he never ran an I.H. baler , He loves and knows balers . John , sold his business to a young fella in Tulare and often will still go drive Swather or bale hay ,when fella is short handed Tony
Tonyinca
9/11/20 Next phase of restoration is the pick up reel . we saved this for while baler is being painted we continue on final component. took two reels apart . The one from this baler showed less wear but more abuse so we are going with this balers original PU reel . i have new stripper bars , having drive slip clutch refaced and waiting on new clutch pads made for it. Have new teeth. having new bushings made for teeth bars and drive shaft. found a new cam for rollers NOW ! Here is what I got !,smashed tin work going to need to become a sheet metal worker real soon . green One is blasted & primed we think we can cut better tin pieces from donor and weld them on here and work them over and look decent . If we can overcome that challenge , then next will be getting this thing all together , then the big one will Be , Will it actually bale hay ? Lo Btw , was able to source these 13 new strippers from CNH , Linder eq here in Tulare found them at A IH dealer in Indiana along with the cam , cam not here yet . few pics tony

Yes , These things are so crusted over with old coats of paint, rust, grease, that blasting first lets me see cracks and problems I would not catch otherwise. Some of these parts , I have blasted twice ,because once you start working on them you start exposing rust that was not accessible. Those tires are actually aircraft tires . these balers had used aircraft tires on heavy side with a shop made wheel with snap ring . so I searched high and low to mimick The originals and came up with these rims and tires. btw tires are new Goodyear seconds they cannot mount on aircraft tires and rims are from a company called Gensco based out of Kingman Arizona tony
Tonyinca
10/7/20 Baler therapy Wednesday , finally almond harvest done , dust , heat , smoke settling down , little cooler started trying to act like fall is here . I'm sure that you are more anxious than everyone following your thread though!! I am so ready to start going back together and not have more repairs pop up . Think every shaft , bearing , cam , tin piece has been addressed , but I am sure we will come across some needing attention still . in back of my mind I have one more item at this point to fabricate , it’s the main belt pulley brake . None of the three balers had one but ours did and I think it’s necessary , I will use my memory once it’s together as to how to manufacture it . tony

exSW
Will you have any hay this late to bale this late? Or will you have to wait until next season?

If all goes well we should be at that point by Feb . We can cycle the tying without hay , which we would want at first To watch movement and measure i have plenty of horse feed stores that I can buy bales of hay in winter time and re bale them if necessary or for display . if we have our CAFES show third weekend of April there should be windrows ready for bale . Feb sounds like a long time but I don’t see painting done till end of Oct. Holidays will take a toll on time . Usually week off for thanksgiving and three weeks for Christmas and new year . Looking forward to putting it together making adjustments as we go along because everything has been removed and so much Re built going to spend lot of time reading op manual for measurements and timing of needles, plunger , twisters , packer fork . Hopefully not have to re do items that were not done right first time . keeping fingers crossed , can’t wait to start in tony
Tonyinca
10/14/20 Great baler therapy Wednesday ! the last two pieces of sheet metal are painted and home along with the Flywheel . David has started sanding and working on baler itself ! at this point all of removed parts are painted and home . We started putting Auger shaft together , however , may need to address two inside bushings that appeared good when taken apart , however , they appear to be spinning on housing instead of shaft , should be minor Easy fix. Still thinking baler should be home end of October . in meantime we are preparing parts hoping to have all ready to go be then tony few pic’s Btw flywheel on baler is a donor only there to help move plunger for painting . Good one is home on pallet .piece hanging from cherry picker is the motor mount . 6

Duntongw
I have just come across this project, and like everyone, am amazed at what it takes to restore something like this. I have restored cars, and it's all a bunch of small projects that add up to the finish product. I grew up and live again in PA, but lived near San Diego for a number of years. A couple of years back, the wife and I were up at Cambria for a long weekend, and while driving around south of there, we came across a hay field that was full of hundreds of hay bales, and there was a large yellow baler with it's motor setting up on top, setting in the field with hay. I wanted to take a picture, but I couldn't stop. At the time I thought they should invest in a newer baler, and not use that old thing. Back here in PA, you see the self propelled balers being used by the Amish, and assume that they are the only people using them. I did not realize that they were used so much, or that they had used that type of machine for so long in CA. Great job, I am sure you will be very proud when you are finished.
