My new to me IH 71 three wire baler arrived !

Recommended Posts

7/23/20

I worked on knotter by myself today , I think it’s complete . I put it through the cycle using a pipe wrench and all seemed to operate as it should .
I adjusted wire holders and twisters and strippers according to book but I am sure they will need more fine tuning before putting power to it

next I will start on chamber press etc to prepare for painter, he is painting many small pieces now and I have many more to take in

however , we will paint main baler frame with knotters, plunger in and chamber in tact and needle cradle in along with needle guard. Needles will be painted separately.

everything else will be installed after paint

still have pickup reel shaft and bushing to machine, plunger stop arm to build up and a plunger guide cleaner to make along with a drive pulley brake, more may show up as we proceed . lol.

Do you disassemble and do finish coat painted ? I guess that’s what you we’re saying. Every  time I do it I have to retouch bolts All the scratches it do assemble

1st question , knotter, plunger , and chamber will be painted all together , the rest will be installed after paint , YES, we get scratches, etc . but David the painter usually does touch ups.  WE usually don't mess things up too much unless its an accident and I have had those.

The Primer is done right after blasting , Its a Valspar industrial etch primer, its sprayed on just thick enough to keep from rusting if kept inside.

Wow what a day John helped me today .
most of our work was laying on our backs adjusting second time plunger rails exchanging few bolts that I deemed better

installed gear box oil pan . Finished installing all bolts on front nose piece and undercarriage of chamber .

we then installed chamber tension channels on top and bottom.
we took several pieces that I had prepared to David and pick up first batch of yellow paint . He has another batch I took Monday and a batch today .

he is still working on sheet metal .

john and I will get together Tues 8/4 and install needle cradle and needle guard and few little items and main baler will be ready to pull to David’s for our shinny yellow. It matches very close to original and it’s a Valspar Product new formulation

of single stage Poly Urathane.
it’s called “Kanga Yellow “Lol.

few pics of long awaited yellow drifting in

Please take some video when you get time, of the knotter in operation. I think since I’ve never seen one in operation. Curious

  8/4/20

       Baler Tuesday this week.

Prepared needle cradle for installation . Easier said than done, we had to remove side chamber tension channels in order to work  that awkward devil into place.

We then wrestled the needle cradle guard into place. once in place we find that cradle is hitting right side guard and needle brake bracket . Had us scratching our heads after trying everything we figured out right guard was bent , not noticeable to the eye but obvious.

Thank God for the donor out back , we took one off laid it next to original and we had our answer . Took donor to blast and primer so David can paint it on baler.

of course any   piece we take off or apart that we thought did not need taking off, needs to be wire brush and rattle can I.H. primer red before re attaching.

We are very close to having baler itself ready for paint, barring many set backs as todays.

      Few pic's
