May have higher rpm s the #71 is set at 2400 rpm idle and 60 revolutions p/ minute on plunger. I’ll need to find out what specs are on Oliver. tony
Tonyinca
6/15/20 As of this afternoon the engine is basically done until we install it, need to time it , make all the wires and fuel lines from the tank . 6/14/20 removed last shaft and bearing left on baler , I was dreading it ,but I got it out ,took from 2pm to 5pm I was trying not to cut more then I had to but there were three sprockets that had to come off in order to remove shaft and I needed shaft to make a new bearing bushing for P.U. reel drive .Lot of Wire Brushing and sanding. finally they came off ! all while laying under bale chamber. lol. Ouch for an old man . lol. but we did it . Went to order bearing , collar and flanges , they said they are old school ,need to order ,ten days out. It seems I.H. had there own thoughts on bearings , etc, I guess that's why we love I.H. BTW , Notice my Luckenbach Texas sign ! Since Waylon , Willy and the boys sang about Luckenbach, when I was a young man, its been on my bucket list to go have a beer with the boys. Well in 2019 we did and I made sure I brought home a reminder ! Cannot believe how many young people come to shop and have no idea of Luckenbach ! Man am I Lucky to be old enough to have listened to Waylon Willy and the Boys ! Love our old country roots ! Tony

So I am getting intimidated going into field with those what I consider fast balers , However my IH 71 may surprise me, I operated it from 1963 to 1974 but always thought it was not as fast , good pace but not a rocket. I have been taking my time and trying to restore the VG4D being its," Antique also ."trying to give it some highlights. BTW , I am giddy over this ; Some time back I purchased a bunch of old IH labeled hose clamps , Got them cleaned and had them chromed . Well guess what ,I had five hose clamps being used on air cleaner and they have a shiny IH logo on them , But you have to know to look .lol But I get tickled seeing them , and probably only one to notice them .lol, lol. I was not a big fan of Wisconsin, however, they did us well , Had it on the first swather we ever had , a NH 900 draper with VG4D on propane. Then on this 71 baler , never had bad problems with it , then my first NH 290 Super Sweep baler had the VG4D, rebuilt it twice in the years I had the 290 because we used it that much, also a three wire . Then they came out with the Deutz air cooled diesel ," Wisc. became obsolete ." IMHO a 505 NH with Deutz diesel was the Mercedes of Balers at the time , Only problem , I could not afford one ! So my 290 and VG4D did the job . Tony

ray54
Well Tony if you really hurry I got hay laying out for a 100 to 200 bales you could try it on yet. Cause I got mad and put my NH 290 W back in the barn this afternoon. Yes my 290 is a little tired ,but so am I. Tuned on the twisters a little and it helped a lot. But the quality of the bale wire is terrible. Out of 5 boxes 2 rats nests. At $100 a box I did not need the last 200 bales ? I have cows they will clean it up. The things we did not think of needing back in the day. I have helped a neighbor that has a tricked out NH 515.It has the bale pressure and pickup height in the original box, but added a electric actuator to the throttle control, has tiny hydraulic ram on the belt tighter, and ram on the tongue to swing it in behind the tractor. So if you need a few little projects after the "build" is done.

Tonyinca
6/17/20 Great baler therapy Wednesday ! I had to break everything loose above the plunger and knotter base , to be able to move the feeder forK tin plate back 1/2" did not realize it was off until last bolt was to be installed on knotter base . it then made sense because I needed about that much more adjustment on the plunger guides . John worked on knotters themselves and finished all three . They are ready to go on shaft, as soon a base is build up with everything that goes there before. our day was cut a little short In Good way as a I H pre 39 collector from Iowa paid us a visit . His name is Johnathan and a friend of RYAN Peters of Iowa. happy to meet Johnathan , John and I visited and Eddie & son Chris and JR, a self employed baler mechanic from tulare who was working on Eddies Freeman baler also came , so happy hour began at 3 pm and lasted to 7 pm out in shop . love this old tractor hobby , it’s all about the people ! tomorrow Johnathan Will go visit Mel in Tulare who also has some pre 39’s Johnathan is the young man next to and right of forklift. chris was not here yet when I took these. few pics tony

Tonyinca
6/24/20 Baler therapy Wednesday started out great , till I realized that I tapped wire stripper bolt holes with a 10mm tap instead of 3/8 thought great will buy a 3/8 heli coil set . bolt holes are drilled and tapped at a slight taper to accommodate strippers , well cannot re- drill holes at proper degrees to match originals , don’t ask me how I know ,so had one base available but it has wear on slides and a crack on a hold down bolt hole. so going to have strip down my template donor because it’s base looks perfect . so this will set us back several weeks on knotters but there is so much more to do that we will not notice , except for anxiety by the owner . Lol good news is we started setting up knotters and we have stripper cam on and one knotter and it seems to be going through the motions very well ! Only two more to go ! Lol lol we will probably ,next week ,take most of day to remove base from donor while trying to keep all together that we can . tony few pics ; third pic is of the six holes that “I”screwed up . fourth pic is a base I had off of Cali baler but I cannot go with it unless I have no choice . Fourth and fifth pic’s of what appears to be a perfect base . But unfortunately have to dismantle my template knotter system donor . First two are our knotters coming together took a while to get it going through the cycle smoothly but finally got it Just takes the right shims and proper adjustments.

Yes I plan to , I am starting to get nervous because I want it baling by third weekend of April 2021, which is our Cal;ifornia Antique Farm Equipment Show ,which I am Chairman of ,IF WE HAVE IT ! Pray all goes back to some semblance of normal. I have already been challenge by a Oliver 101 three wire being restored now also ,Freeman 330, two 55W's . WE will try to have them all baling at CAFES 2021. I am bummed at my mistake on the knotter base but little extra work should be back on schedule. Tonyinca
6/28/20 pulled donor up to shop started removing knotter base to replace ours after my screw up ? Started at 5pm had it off by 9pm , looks better then the one we were using this one has nor cracks or flaws , so off to blast and primer. might of been a blessing in the end as we had to braze a pretty good crack in center of original . took quite a few smaller parts to David the painter hopefully soon we will see some yellow paint . I hated to take this knotter apart wanted for a template , however there is so many welded pieces here and there that , I don’t think we need to follow their settings to closely ! I think anything we do will be more likely to work. They did not have parts available and tried to make home remedies work the best they could . ? tony

Tonyinca
13 hours ago, TroyDairy said: You know the flatbed has been MIA for a bit...... Boy ! I cannot get anything past this Dutch Dairyman But Troy is right , I have my old blacksmith's 1966 3/4 ton flat bed up North at I.H. Parts of America . Its been a slow go and the picture down load has disappeared some how. However ! July 15 I am headed to Grass Valley to check it out, get pictures and start a New thread . I had started one on IH trucks board on RED Power , however ,I have not kept it up because of distance and lot of set backs . Now that Redkid is done , I'll devote my attention to old" HERB," That's the blacksmith's first name; HERBERT JENSEN & SON BLACKSMITH SHOP. He helped me so much when my dad died and I was trying to save the farm at 19 years old with old I.H. used stuff and He was always ready to fix my junk and keep me rolling in the field. He was Danish and I was Portuguese every time I walked in the door of his shop he would say OH Heck ! How do we fit a square peg into a round hole ? Back in the days, that was a sign of friendship to kid each other about nationalities . He was a square head Dane and I was a barnyard Portagee . The joke was you can take a Portagee out of the barn but you cannot take the Barn out of the Portagee . He passed and business was sold. I bought his truck from his grandson. About 5 years ago , been saving it till I got caught up and recovered some dollars. I watched him build the bed for it back in 1966-67 ,truck was new and my mouth watered for something that nice to farm with but all I had was a wore out 56 Ford that left me most of time. I did not have two nickels to rub together at the time. I'll start a new thread here on the Projects and build & restoration page. Hope you guys don't get sick of my posts , but like I told my wife @ 74 Its now or never, The" window is closing" and I need all these projects done so I can have fun with them before the," Widow's auction" which Troy Dairy has bidder card # 01.and you are all invited ! Tonyinca
7/1/20 Baler therapy Wednesday ! good day , the knotter system is all together and going through hand driven motion seems well . we need to replace knotter base but this Is a great step , was worried of getting shims where needed and getting the trip dog in proper operating mode , so far so good been trying to get David going on yellow paint but he is still doing Body work on tin pieces . tony
Tonyinca
7/8/20 Baler therapy Wednesday . we exchanged knotter base , a blessing in disguise , we had braised original one in two places . This donor had a perfect base. we used a porta power to press top of feeder house tin into proper position for the plunger guides .obviously fork hit it in its past life. Also to set twister mechanism where it is perfectly lined up had to use A come a long on left side plate And position shims where needed. It all seems to line up nicely now . we moved forward with knotter in place and it was put through cycle by hand and it seems to be functioning correctly. Albeit will need a lot of timing measurements as we go along . Now we are working on timing wire strippers to twister hooks as prescribed in Op manual . Going to have to shave .040 off twister clutch so plate will accept the roll pin . few pics , Btw if things go as planed John and I will be off baler till 7/29/20 tony
