Sledgehammer
Looks like good progress Tony. The Lord blessed you with more patience than he did me. I’m sure it will be really cool to see a bale come out of that thing some day. 1

I’m sure it will be really cool to see a bale come out of that thing some day. Thank You Sledgehammer , During this Covid 19 shutdown , My helper John's wife has preferred that he lay low. So, since first of April I have been working on it by myself every afternoon and early evening . Its been good because it gave me chance to slow down evaluate things as I go along and not be to inpatient with send items out . Motor work took a month, Knotter build up of gears ,strippers ,etc will probably six weeks, Today I took feeder fork crank and casting that two shafts run through for new bushings and pin polishing ,I expect it to be six weeks . These shops are operating but with fewer people and doing priority work first. I have plenty to do with engine , I need to paint block, sheet metal is powder coated , then build engine on outside such as re-wire it , new gauges and switches , install protronix distributor , new carb, paint and install generator and starter and new voltage regulator, fuel pump , make new fuel line from tank . Still have not started on the Pick up Reel. Unfortunately may need to seek a new painter , David my painter is willing but unable as he is primary care giver for his brother, Who has had two strokes and needs 24 /7 care. hardtail
I remember we discussed this years ago on shovelhead forum, as all that stuff was air cooled for over 100 years, harley wrinkle black was the best for heat dissipation with black absorbing and releasing it's heat as the best color and the wrinkle slightly increased the surface area with it's irregular finish regardless looking great Tony
Tonyinca
Did my prep and painted the block and Genny and starter . never thought I could even paint a color picture . Lol tony

But I am hoping that we can tackle that last as baler is being painted Had big meeting with David the painter and he is going to purchase paint and supplies and get started painting. Hopefully his family situation let’s him get er done in timely fashion tony

I agree , I am trying to make it as likable as I can Going back with new Protronix distributor with associated plug wires and coil , Plan to run AV gas in it like I do my other toys , It will be interesting how well it starts and runs Hope I know how to time this thing , been reading all the manuals. Funny thing , this is serial 348xxx and is positive ground , 378xxx beyond they are negative ground , I am at crossroads do I want positive or negative ground ? Tonyinca
5/30/20 Engine is basically finished ! Waiting on Air cleaner ,its clamps and air tube to be powder coated. Waiting to make sure all my throttle linkage is correct before installing fuel pump. On 6/3/20 John is scheduled to be back from his S.I. place 60 miles south .lol. We plan to start assembling some parts on baler that are best painted in place David thought he could start painting in between caring for his brother, Hope that is the case. After getting baler ready for paint , John and I will begin working on Pick up reel , HOPING TO MAKE A GOOD ONE FROM THESE TWO ! The good looking one , IS out of the California baler and REALLY WORE OUT, The bent up one looks to have very little wear and is actually off this Nevada baler . Still have knotter parts at welding and machine shops, Everything has been so slow during these last two months , but I think we are in good position to move forward with all repairs done except the pick up reel . It will depend on David and his spray gun ! I have access to two other painters but David has done most of my restoration work and He has asked me to try working with him as he needs the work . I feel that I owe him the loyalty . Few pic's Tony

It was pretty much rough shape. I searched for parts ,was told they been out of business for close to 50 years. Zenith filled the gap , basically same carb but zenith all dimensions same, pretty available but pricy. Tony
Tonyinca
6/3/20 John and I back at it ! all our work is back from machine shop and welding fabricator . we installed knotter casting and anchor plate .and installed knotter base with that all anchored we proceeded to install plunger knives and began setting plunger to specs . Easier said then done . Had to do a little shims to get our tolerances. we found one more top plunger guide that was missing , so borrow from donor and need build up. Our plan is to continue assembly to a point where most of baler can be painted as a unit then paint small pieces as we go. I can see it’s going to be slow goIng reading manuals and measuring as we go And sometime two and three times ! Lol lol tony few pic
Tonyinca
6/6/20 Thought we had all rails , runners , guides rebuilt and. done ! While trying to set plunger today realized there was a plunger guide missing from this machine, A small one but in a critical area of plunger travel. hard to see because it’s attached under sheet metal on upper rail Searched donor out back and found one . Wore way beyond useful ,can see where previous owner tried building it up in place with his welder. I am hoping its same dimensions as the longer one I had done. Not withstanding pickup reel , I am Hoping for the day that all pieces have been cleaned of rust and repaired or built up ! Was thinking only item left for machine shop was Pickup reel drive shaft and bushing but still have one more small plunger guide. Thank God I found it while looking at donor for a template of plunger rail. I suspect pickup reel will need machine work on teeth bar pivots. Feels great though to be moving forward ,ever so slow is okay as long as it works when done Tony

The old Westinghouse Electric slogan comes to mind. "Progress - Our Most Important Product". Not exactly the case for you, but it must be rewarding. 1
Tonyinca
6/10/20 Baler Wednesday, Great day in shop , Plunger is aligned and rails secured , Knives are parallel vertically less then 1/16 as book says. Had to use two shims on bottom rails to get it less the I/16 at knives. My rebuilt top rail guides are ready and ill pickup today. Installed top feeder fork/plunger feed opening tin sheet . Started on knotter twisters , Have everything back from machine shop , Built up twister gear slides, resurfaced any piece that wire touches , took groves out or in some cases ground and polished them out. I have one shaft and bearing been dreading to get off because it has three sprockets to get off before removing, BUT shaft has to come off because it drives basically everything and machine shop needs it to make a new bushing on Reel pickup where it is supported. After this one comes off , All shafts have been removed and every bearing and bushing ,new . 6/18/20 should be three weeks since ordered paint , Hope its in , I am getting inpatient wanting to see yellow paint. lol. few pic's Tony
Tonyinca
6/11/20 machine shop fast tracked my upper plunger guides. Now I can button up plunger and move on . Rest of pieces blasted and primered at this point . Till we reach the pu reel tony
Tonyinca
Had a free day today so spent day in shop working on this temperamental old girl . By installing the feed opening or feeder fork tin and installing the newly rebuilt plunger guides, I had to re-align everything , remove shims from stationery knife, etc . BooCu bolts involved . I think I have it . My arms are bruised and scraped from reaching in chamber holding bolts while stretching to put nuts on top and using a pry bar to align holes. My wife came out approved of my gymnastics as good exercise, being she is always after me to work out more Hoping for another full day in shop tomorrow. Got rest of my powder coated engine parts today , Hope to have engine finished tomorrow. Not installed but ready ! Tony
Farmall1066
My goodness Tony!!! This baler has been one heck of a project!! It’s crazy how much stuff has been to the machine shop, renewed, rebuilt, or just plain having to be built! I thought some of the things I’ve fixed have been intense, and looked all over to find the things I’ve needed to make it complete, but you have definitely been on the hunt for parts, and kept a machine shop busy to get this baler back up to making hay again!! I sure wish I was closer, I’d love to come help you, and learn a little bit about a baler!! Looking real good Tony, real good!!?????? A few balers being restored out there!! That would be cool to see them in the same field baling together!!!! How were the 101 Oliver’s fast? Everything sped up? Or just pushed the hay into the bale faster?
nepoweshiekfarmalls
The Oliver had better be fast! If this big yellow one catches it, it will sweep it up and bale it. ?

If it's anything like the 720 Oliver I had. That thing would bale anything! 1
