This was at Diamond Valley Nevada on a High Desert hay ranch . Said He had a lot of old equipment saved. Tony Holy crap...ive been there! Friend worked 4-5 years for a farm in diamond valley. They made premium Timothy hay for their own feed stores in CA and places like churchill downs and such. If its the guy I visited he was S a few sections and had a incredddiibblleee collection. Oliver guy...lots of them. Several IH and trucks like nobodys biz. Had the 2 corners (15 acres) basically full and then the yard to. It was amazing. I can still find it on Earth. Just neat row after row. The truck looks just perfect. Just frustrating about the lines etc. Just think it be more straight fwd.
Tonyinca
This State mandate has really slowed everything. 4/16/20 Fuel tank has been boiled and acid, pretty clean inside knotter parts with any sign of wire grooving has been sent to machine shop for build up and polish Engine sheet metal has all been repaired and powder coated black lights buckets have been powder coated yellow and bucket leads purchased from Brillman ,waiting on sealed beams from Stiener Engine should be out of machine shop by first of May. Soon I will begin on pickup reel Been taking inventory of brackets, trinklets ,needed and sourcing them from the donors When John comes back we should be able to hit it hard in going back together, I think I have 99% of components ready for install. exSW
Have fun with that pickup reel. Did one on a New Holland 269 Super Sweep once. Talk about having to hold your mouth right getting everything lined up!

I remember working on like this one when young, laying on my back and needed double swivel fingers on the little bolts . This one however, Will be on a pallet held up by forklift , hoping it will much easier.. Tony

Tony If I remember correctly I think our main problem was on final assembly was getting the reel end plate over the tine bars. Things were pretty springy.

Tonyinca
4/25/20 while waiting on machines shop to rebuild Wisc . Engine and for welding shop to build up knotter twister parts , I thought that mainframe was about ready However , checking alignment on knotter shaft and auger shaft , I was not satisfied . I removed main cast housing on right side of chamber that feeder fork, knotter , auger shafts run through Sure enough the corrosion build up between cast and side of bale chamber was deflecting the alignment . I will be reblasting cast and polishing shafts and checking bushings ( there are no short cuts allowed , I thought I could get away without removing that cast but no ,and good thing, bolts were eaten away and rust & dirt had packed in on bottom corner creating the pressure point) meantime , have engine sheet metal powder coated black , been working on exhaust system , found a NOS Nelson spark arrester and had a tip built for it. also the lights used on this machine were same as 560 Farmall . Found three old ones , had them powder coated yellow , ( color of machine) new seal beams and light leads , fuel tank has been acid dipped and blasted . Starter and Generator being rebuild . Starter was full of Daubber nests and dirt lol. Did a little blasting on my own in blast cabnet, my primer is red been slow during shelter in place but things are getting done just a much slower pace . few pic tony

Thank You ! It has me wondering if there is an end to dismantling and rust . lol. Thank God I decided to take the casting off as the bushings appear good but the rust and grit was beginning to scar the shaft surface, just from us turning it by had to break loose and hoping that I did not have to take apart. At this point I am having to polish all shafts as they were frozen from years of sitting. they do polish out nicely , this machine did not have much wear but it was neglected and abused. Tonyinca
Gathering few more items Motor back from machine shop. going to learn to paint high temp black on all of castings , fins will remain un painted. Gen & starter rebuilt ready for painting that dear little pulley took a 50 ton press to get off and even at that she did not want to leave her spot . BTW Bored .30 over new pistons , new valves and seats tony
nate
Great job tony! I was always told not to paint cooling fins because it doesn’t dissipate heat as well. You should be fine giving it a light coat to keep rust off.
IHhogfarmer
Awesome Tony!! It’s been great to follow along and see you doing this project. We can all tell it’s not an easy undertaking! By the end of this are you even wanting to know how much you have in this baler project?? Lol

Lol I am keeping track but not telling now or when finished , I will tuck paper work away only to be found by my Estate if they want to do a sale. Perhaps they can get a dollar more providing prove of restoration. Lol lol. all kidding aside it’s daunting the cost of things . Luckly when I sold the ranch three years ago , I sold my working equipment on a 7 year note separate from all else , told my wife and kids this is my shop money . so basically I sold good working Almond harvesting equipment and am putting it into non working old junk . Lol lol but if the world goes crazy and we revert 50 years I’ll have tractors , mowers , balers ready to start farming old school . Lol lol tony 2

Tonyinca
5/1/20 little more set back inspecting the drive shafts and bearings I found corrosion distorting the whole foundation of the knotter system . At this point every piece of tin or steel plate, casting supporting the knotter , feeder fork ,Auger has been removed and rust scraped off and pieces being sent back through blaster. few pics as of 9 pm this evening when I finally got chipped and on pallet for blasting tony

LOL What a project!!!!
TroyDairy
Being from NV there (this one from Diamond valley?) I am surprised by the deep in cracks rust. I get the sun burns the paint off but generally things dont look so rusty.

What I have figured is that its high desert with very cold dryer snow in winter , So with extreme temps one way or other expand and contract with snow sitting there melting deep into any separations . Its amazing even all the bolts are eaten away in centers. This machine is only 56 years old , I have restored much older with much less corrosion damage. Little by little hidden spots are getting blasted and primed and or wire brushed and primed . 98% of all bolts replace with grade 8 's P.S. that bolt is one of better ones. Lol 5/4/20 Spent most of day chipping and wire brushing rust cakes , finally around 9 pm washed and applied primer and all the parts taken off of there are back at blaster.
