Sorted off one of their heifers for the third time that week. Called Phill and told him either you keep her home, or pick her up in Valentine. He said her owner was from Iowa and wouldn’t be impressed. I said she will be on our scale, but she is a tad bit edgy. You might wanna leave her in the trailer over night if you come get her. He loaded her up, I hauled her to Valentine the following Monday. A week later he told me I wasn’t kidding and the check was on the way to Iowa. There is just no reason deal with a breachy and/or mean cow. Too much at stake if you get hurt. Not too surprised Phil took her to town, he never could run very fast and he ain't gettin any faster😂
midnightman
Moving some hay from the river bottom before the weather changes. Pictures don’t really do justice to the beauty of the fall colours along the valley.

You got alot less leaves left there than we got here
sandhiller
Helped a neighbor ship three loads of heifers this morning. Started pulling the cows off at five. Yes, damn dark but lights in the corral were good enough to tell a cow from a calf😄 When it got light enough to see good, pulled off 100 replacement hfrs. At least when you start early you are done early

sandhiller
No purty pictures No scenic vistas. Just dust and hair and processed grass product. Pregged 840 head. Headgate closed on first cow at 7:10, last cow left chute at 12:16. Two ahorseback, two afoot, the vet and a chute monkey. Good crew. Was beginning to think I didn't have the salt to hang with these young guys but sticking around is paying off. Owner decided to redo his working alley and is going with a bud box so we are in negotiations for his tub. Which will work perfect for me as I redo my setup at home!

A small pen that helps get cattle to feed into a working alley that is just before the chute by making them think they are going back where they came from. In the right set ups they work very well and are simple. I considered it very seriously but decided a sweep tub would work better in my situation

ray54
Jeff how big is the tub? I replace a triangle pen with a tub, was not the improvement I hoped for. But the sweep gate is 16 foot. It fit the sheet steel from a bolted together oil field tank. The tub hold 10 to 12 cows. Lead up hold 3 or 4 and one in the chute. Found it work better if you only put 5 or 6 in tub. The one guy that preged suggested the coming with less cows which helps lot.

Either ten or twelve foot, I forgot to measure it. put 5 to 7 cows in at a time is enough. they have to have room to turn around 3 to4 in adjustable (for width) alley way ahead of the chute. As long as the vet is accurate................................. If they are a certain time along (90 to 120 days?) they are easiest to find. He has the side door open and is entering the chute the same time the headgate is closing Brad is over 800K pregged in his career so knows what he is feeling for😄
