ray54
I could make that work here, 😉 if you would come get all the stray dogs and cats.🤣 You know coyotes and mountain lion dogs and cats. One family of Basks that came to USA to herd sheep for others have 2 large bands of sheep left in the area. Of course many little flocks of sheep but all less than 30 ewes. But the Bask family has more cattle than sheep anymore I would guess. The coyotes and lions live well in California. Because they think real cats and dogs taste good if no deer or sheep around.

Yeah..maybe so, Mr Pickett.......and if you saw my efforts at making a sandwhich, for lunch, you would no doubt ,politely, tell me to stick with my day job...whatever that may be.....but.......if one is hungry, a sandwhich made with fresh bread and cold mutton, with a bit of pickle...or relish, spread on it , is really good tucker......especially when sluiced down with black tea..... Incidently.....the just on 4000 ewes put to the rams, yeilded 141% lambing...thus far over 3/4 of the lambs have been finished...and gone to the meat exporters @$158.00 per head......good returns....but having the wool clip worth only a cent or two above shearing / handling and frieght costs, makes it hard going in this realm of rapidly rising costs over the farm gate..... junkandcattle
Keeping this thread closer to the front and laughing at the same time. Had a few second chancers that were left with the bull. I haven't decided what I will do with them as I like the fall calving. So far it has paid off with as I now have some young pairs. This home raised half Angus had a yellow calf last year and it vanished overnight, this week she had this.

Early, usually have a couple or three every spring. Problem is the bulls are done breeding their spring calving cows when my fall calvers are just coming in. It ain't always the bulls fault either. I have had some "loose girls" jump the fence to find a bull when they were feeling frisky🥰 1

sandhiller
As mist of you know, I don't start calving till first of August. Seem to have 1 or 2 spring born every year though. Have had two already out of first calf heifers, all good. During the last storm found this little guy in the hay row with no mother. I could see he had sucked so knew he got his colostrum. I figured he'd mother up and I'd get him tagged. Well, he never did. I thought I had the right cow but she ignored him out in the pasture so brought them both in. She was a real female dog and fought me the whole time. I armed her and she was empty with a tight bag so pretty sure she was the right one. But she stood good for him in the chute and with a little coaxing......good results. Now just sit back and let him fill up. Hope she lets him suck in the pen and I don't have to get her in the chute too many more times 🤠
1256pickett
Having a chute that’s easy to let calf have access is a god send. My old chute it could be done but never knew how bad it was tilll I got the new one. Of course the old one was top of the line back when it was new in 1960ish? little guy looks pretty good for being ignored!

On my old Powder River, the sides came off so the calf could stand on level ground. This Parasol just pivots down, a bit slanted and slick. I'm just gonna cut a couple rubber mats to throw on so a calf has better footing. He had "yellow" under his tail but was awful ganted up the morning I brought him in. Much better this morning, good full normal looking belly. Momma still hates me but will come up for some cake without trying to dead center me betwixed her ears.🤣 She let the calf suck in the pen so never had to put her in the chute again so that was good. 🤠

I am envious of your chute and would still buy your Powder River if you decided to sell.

Very true but my border collie is getting old like me and although he would, I wouldn't put him in a pen with a cow like her. And besides she claimed him good by the next morning. Just letting them be together in the pen a few days more to make sure the bond sticks and he is a little older to keep up with her on the way back out. The more I use the Parasol the more I like it and am comfortable with it. Just needs a brisket bar and would like straight verticles on the head gate like I made for the Powder River self catch head gate. Getting closer to letting the Powder River go, you will be my first call Nick.

I'm sure I've almost had a few heart attacks lol
