I had to bury Max the other day, he was my companion for nearly 13 years.  He was up and about until his last day, I couldn't bear to put him down but he spared me that and passed on his bed in the garage with my wife and me by his side the next morning.

Thanks for listening, it's great that there are 77 pages of posts on a "dog thread" on an old machinery forum.

That last pic speaks volumes.

Very sorry for the loss of your friend.

The last couple of days feeding calves without Gus has been hard on me and seeing the others who have lost their constant companions, I feel your pain.

I think I speak for everyone on here when I say our lives would be very empty without our dogs.

Wife knows I been down so tried to cheer me up with this photo of Cash and the caption:

The Border (collie) has been overrun by the cats

RETREAT   RETREAT  😄

I'll bet there is more common ground in loving dogs, than the merits of red tractors on this forum. Tells you what you need to know about dogs.

friend of mine had one of those hardtail panheads... surprisingly fast of a bike on top end, with what gearing it had.  i rode it one time and came back surprised anyone could endure the ride (but, my road here at the farm isn't a city street or highway).  the guy kept having wrist watches vibrate and quit on him.  then, we were in his shop and he dumped out a big old folgers coffee can of bolts, looking for a bolt of a particular size, and in that can of bolts was one of those tuning fork watches... accutron... said, "there's dad's old watch"... his dad was a long haul truck driver that chain smoked and drank the heck out of coffee, stayed off interstates, ran the 2 lanes at 55mph, coast to coast, and loved trucking.  that watch still ran and it outlasted the panhead's five more years with the guy.  if it was above 30F temp and not raining, he was riding that bike everywhere, to work, just everywhere.  i bet he put over 100kmi on it in a 10yr ownership.  i was riding a '75 gold wing stripped of its fairing, luggage, and muffler, so like a weird bigger 750, with a weird high rpm VW sound, and he was nice enough to not give me crap over it.  that was in '84... long time ago.   brakes were leading shoe, and not very good.  he kept slinging the riveted rear brake shoe lining, with no front brakes, and multiple times we left his house to ride to work at the auto parts store 25mi away, and he'd have no brakes.  he'd compression brake and then scooted shoes on the pavement.  i'd never believe it without seeing it.  then he'd get lining material and fix the brake shoes.  ought to have had a spare set, really.

here's the bike riding dog i had... sam #2... dad named dogs the same name over and over... said, "it's just easier and the dog don't know the difference"... he'd ride that gt550 everywhere... it was a cheap bike and i didn't mind the scratches... that dog hated everyone but me, the folks, and that guy with the panhead.  everyone else, he distrusted, wanted to bite, and was very giving that he didn't bite everyone all the time.  but... the guy he hated more than anyone was the UPS driver.  he could hear that truck a half mile away and would go into a shrill wild animal high pitched growl and would hit the yard running... as the truck would come by, he'd run in an arc to try to match the window of opportunity to get in the door of the passing UPS truck... he had nerve damage in a paw from a previous car accident, and every now and then he'd falter... one day, he was nearly to the door on timing, and he faltered... under he went.  it's been 35yrs ago, so i'm more removed from the awfulness of the day.  but, i'll say this, the guy went doing something he loved... trying to bite that UPS driver.   sam #3 was a much friendlier dog, but that's another story.

sorry for the long windedness there... dad's cancer nurse (that i dated a while after dad's passing, and that i miss greatly) said of a survey of the pictures in the house here at the time, selected and placed where my late mom put them, "beards and dogs"...

After losing my border collie Harvey back in February (13 yrs.) I wasn’t sure if I should get another dog that could probably outlive me.  It was kind of a lonely Spring without a dog though and when I found a litter of red border collie/Australian shepherd puppies nearby on Craigslist, I decided to take the chance.  Been a week now and seems to be going ok so far.  Wish me luck with the whole “puppy” thing!  This is Molly60D699D6-9FB9-4018-A6C3-D0284BACA011.thumb.jpeg.04eb7557aee6937ad26f519175f82418.jpeg

Hopefully she has a little more Border Collie than Aussie. Our four year old Aussie thinks he is a six month old puppie.  Cute dog.

,,great story, Russ...Thanks !!!

...the UPS  truck and the old Hounds reaction reminded me of a very good driver , who drove one of the early Cummins powered Australian  6x4  trucks  I had....This bloke had a dog who could somehow differentiate between "His"   truck and an identical spec'd truck.....when either truck drove past the farm where driver and hound lived..The old hound would fire up barking when ''his'' truck went by....but wouldn't even raise his head  when t'other identical IH   truck went by

Quite amazing , I thought

Thanks, Mike.   Dogs are amazing on being analog computers.   I’m on the tail end of a good life with my English Shepherd here now.  So intuitive on “things  not right” on the place.  She may go a month or a year or three years.  Trickle of issues.  But I love her like a sibling and she gets that level of attention.  I pity the poor uninformed fellow or gal that never had a good dog to know the value that they bring to a life.

Russ...we are ''dog less''    at the moment....the trauma  of loosing our most recent dog to a particular phenomena, that NZ ''Huntaways ''  seem to get at around six/ eight years old..was such that its taken a day or two hundred to get another....

So, in  South Island,  NZ we have a bunch of High Country Stations...where several shepherds plus the Boss   (Owner ) ...can have  an absolute multitude of good working dogs....However, it is tough on them, running up high, in shingle scree rocks  etc  mustering sheep ...so the dogs are often retired , before they get to old ....and have to be ''put down''...you get the drift...  So  there is always a bunch of good working dogs...older dogs...to ''give to a good home ''We have had one , two dogs ago  (!!)....she was a great companion...but inevitably  time took her out....more tears in the house..sigh

So , as of now, my old Cook has got  a hound lined up for us....pups are great ,but getting an older dog  saves the Cooks  slippers getting chewed up..or the chooks getting   chased into the trees,,or the cat harrased  etc etc..Anyway  when  the new old "Hound :"  arrives...it will add to the multitude allready on this topic....

Thanks again for your insight into one of mans great companions..

Picture of second to last hound...she loved riding in or out of the vehicles

And tonight…..he’s hiding behind the shower curtain.  Fireworks and thunder, his only two fears in the world. ABCDF7D2-F051-40F5-B010-3F70606977F2.thumb.jpeg.b69295b569e40e5804e01c6fa50356d4.jpeg

Poor little guy, damn fireworks.

Maybe get him in your lap?

Might feel safer with you?

Glad we dont have to deal with much of the noise... nobody really around but a few neighbors that enjoy the same peace and quiet.. we all have acres at the very least between us and most of us are backed up to uninhabited private/state land.

Hi Mike,  great picture of a great dog.  I’ve spent most of the day with a stunningly good vet and my Dolly’s post lymphoma removal pocket infection… doing a lot better.  13.5yr old, so waiting for the other shoe to drop.  The vet is of the old school and is willing to do a Sunday call.  Fine man, fine vet.  Seems to be doing a lot better.  Lot of sleep lost in the last two days.  But a lot of George Dickel whiskey substituted for it too.

He’s a lap dog for sure, but he can’t be comforted when anything is rumbling or booming in the sky.  If we’re outside, and a Dark cloud rolls in….he goes inside to hide.  I’ve  tried to hold him wrapped in a blanket, and he’ll tolerate  it because he thinks I want him to, but he seems most comfortable when he can go and pick his own spot.

As Dolly above can attest to, nothing better than a cool dip on a hot day.

Cash appreciates the many "swimming pools" I keep full just for him😄
