I’ve got a “frugal” neighbor that researches parts to buy the -absolute- cheapest parts he can get.  I’ve seen the guy buy $8 rotors for a dodge caravan. ($8.  And $12 pads), do both ends of a small suv or van for $50,  and he’s done his F150 for $100.  Really.   Not within the last 12-16 months, but fairly recently.
and he’s had great luck with all of it.
Given, I know another guy that bought $10 rotors for a dodge stratus….locked up the brakes one morning, and a front rotor exploded. He removed the wheel, knocked out the chunks,  taped a piece of wood in the caliper, continued on to work. No big chunks. It went right to pieces.

Around 10 years ago we could buy cheap front rotors for a 2003 Cavalier for around 16 dollars from local Napa, even more recent, rear rotors for a 2004 golf for $19, they were just that common, in my opinion the "horrific" failures of parts is usually installer error or freak manufacturing defect, but the cheap part usually gets blamed, can happen with any brand of part, especially now a days, a guy can buy the same part in 5 different boxes with varying price and warranty

A customer of mine bought SKP lower ball joints for his Ranger off Rock Auto for 6 dollars each, they were in the economy section there, they were the same ball joint you buy as ACDelco Professional or NAPA Premium

I've done the wood in the caliper thing when I cant get the bleeder screw out, put the banjo bolt to the top and bleed

I bought a 2003 Ram 1500 4 door shortbox 2wd 4.7L a couple years back, I suddenly was self employed and needed a truck, I got it from my friend for $400, I had worked on it before so it already had dual exhaust. it was missing the LF wheel, new wheel bearing from local supplier failed horrifically (when I started to tell this story I didn't recall that fact) I had to get a used spindle locally and the rotor was cheaper here too, from Rock Auto I got 4 shocks, a tie rod, sway links, wheel bearing, caliper, pads, belt, tensioner, air filter for around $250, I think the shocks were 7 and 12 bucks each, pretty awesome to be able to get that much for so little, when the truck lost the wheel it bounced off into a swamp, my friend looked for it with no luck, a year later driving by in a backhoe he spotted it, the AC worked in that truck too, I had around $1200 in it getting it on the road with licensing and parts, drove it for almost 2 years, put a rad in it, used tires, rear pads, added a couple used leafs, a flex hose and brake line, it was a great cheap truck, it was getting rusty and ugly and I wanted a nicer looking truck, so I parked it, usually a beater like that especially because it's 2wd is hard to get 500 for and you have to talk to people, over time I could turn it into 1000 plus in parts and then scrap, but there is effort and storage in that, through word of mouth/chance/Covid craziness, a guy wanted to buy it, he is retiring from rebuilding starters and alternators for years, and needs a truck to clean out his shop, I was hard nosed at 1000, he tried for less respectfully, then agreed to 1000, fellow tradesman I gave it to him for 800, and the truck drives another day

I'm going to sound a little crazy here, if there is such a thing as spirits and such, of the hundreds of vehicles I've owned this has to be the most possessed of them all, my friend inherited the truck from his Grandfather(Moe) who died suddenly by being struck by a motorcycle while on vacation in Jamaica, Moe was involved in Arctic exploration and construction of transmission towers in the 60s and 70s and then was a school bus mechanic for years, pretty handy guy, my friend liked that it was his Grandpa's truck but wasn't in love with 2wd, and not a big Dodge fan, or auto mechanic, so the truck ends up in my hands and gets a new lease on life, full set if mechanic's tools in the back seat, doing service calls, full Moe style, I eventually retire it and a buyer shows up, another mechanic, so no Christine moment yet, just mechanics running junk, but on a day that I planned on cleaning the truck out to be ready for pickup, I was procrastinating, my Dad came in to tell me the park lights were on in that truck and he shut them off, Dad's footprints were the only ones in the snow....

Way off topic about dogs, but dogs like trucks

Here's a truck that's getting front leaf spring bushings from Rock Auto

My parents and my sisters family each adopted/rescued these girls this winter.  Sisters. Labra-golden-doodles….they think. They’ve each gained about 15pounds.  AAACFD3E-51D3-4816-8845-C69F44A8A8B2.thumb.jpeg.24ab9549469897c74cac8c2973ea1edb.jpegD82F735F-B2CA-43DD-85B1-F7CF870175BA.thumb.jpeg.82bdc359a1d9a0ca6097ed93c290eade.jpegD10CEBE3-98B7-464A-827E-2E6C4917A5B9.thumb.jpeg.5a03492d26a58ef3c69cd019cc7cafc4.jpegThe white one is the new farm dog and the brown one rides shotgun in the veterinarian service truck. So they went from being homeless to gainfully employed as well

I as well am sorry to hear that news.

Really hope the vet is wrong or at least he can live with it.

My last Weimeraner Gus had a heart murmur, it was bothersome to feel but he made a full life.

He is such a good lookin' little guy, I sure hope and pray for good news and health.

...something a bit different.....Lady takes her  dogs and a Arapawa  Goat on bush walks  and camping trips...

The three animals have been used together to help dementia  patients .....and the two dogs are trained to avoid contact with some rare ground birds ...that still survive in New Zealand.....

Dogs are "Skippy  and "Shadow"'    (blue heeler   and border collie).....and the goat is "Masport "

Masport wears a trail cam..pictured...and speaking of swing bridges....has no issues crossing them

Mother thought we should give the kids some time off so she's watching the grandson and I'm watching the heavies.

With the help of his dogs Tuff and Cash.
