No matter how many dogs I have, I'll always remember the dog I had as a boy - Valerie. She will always be special to me in a way that no other can be. Not better or worse, just uniquely special. So even though he's gone, I'm sure he's immortal in your son's memory.

A while back my son Clay was carrying tools off a roof. The ladder moved dropping him ten feet to the pavement below and landing on the back of his head. It was bad.

His recovery was slow but steady. 

The one thing that helped get him though his long days was Chase, his 6 yo red Visla.

When the neurologist cleared him for limited work, he hired a man to help and went back to finish the roof where he had his accident.

Only a few doors down from where lived so Chase tagged along 

About halfway through the day Chase ran into the street and was run over and killed by a pickup 

Clay called and through a very wavering voice told me what had happened and that he was bringing Chase home to bury him on the bluff overlooking the ranch and Niobrara.

RIP Chase, you were a good boy.

 

We talked a lot about what a good dog chase was but clay was having a very hard time dealing with the loss on top of recovering from his accident.

About a week later Clay came out to sit by Chases grave and think some things through. Only to find coyotes had dug him up and drug off his remains.

This pushed Clay over the edge and put him in a very dark place.

He was making some progress when he texted he need to see me when I came in to the truck tonight.

This is who he met me with!

Gentlemen, meet Porter, a heavy boned,  bright eyed, beautiful black lab puppy.

Clay's smile, the sparkle in his eyes and the excitement in his voice is something I have not seen in a long time.

No amount of medicine, no amount of nothin will do for Clay what this little guy will!

Lord, thank you for sending us angels in the form of dogs to help us navigate our way through life. 

And most especially, for little angel puppies😃

While on the subject.... RIP Pepsi ( right in the center ) Age 16 years and 5 months! Loving family pet and stalwart hunter. He was entered in a run off stake class where everyone puts in their best hounds for 4 straight years in a row and received 1 third place ribbon and 2 seconds and 1 first place ribbon. Over 30 beagles entered in each stake class, whoever does the best job running the rabbit.

My sympathy to all whom have lost their side kick recently. I have never been attached to a pet like I am to this one. He is young and if I were to lose him prematurely it would break my heart.

Stories like this is why I don’t visit this thread very often. There’s way too many of these tear jerkers.

He is Shitzu and Maltese predominately. 

1256, we spent 132 hours grain carting this fall and he spent many hours like that, even taking dumps.

Priceless indeed, how do you put a price on salvation.

 

and I am truly sorry for the precedence, should have just posted the pic of Clay with his new angel. 

sometimes it just comes gushing out. 

don't mean it too but it is life.......and death........and life renewed.

I am not ashamed to say my dogs mean the world to me.

I guess I have a defect of talking to you here like l would talk to a friend face to face. 

Last Wednesday wife called to say goodnite. ( I was in the damned old truck) Said it was a rough night. Gus n Cash followed her down to the garden and was sniffing and hunting around in the meadow. 

When it was time to come back up to the house, Gus was down on his back end and couldn't get up. Old age has really loosened his hips up. 

 finally had to call the neighbors to come help load him up (he still weighs 110) to get him to the house and onto his bed by the sliding doors. 

When I got home, he had drug himself halfway to the bedroom and was laying on the living room floor. 

I slept on the floor by him that night dreading the inevitable that morning would bring. 

I got up twice after seven to call the vet but couldn't finish the call. 

Finally decided I would get dressed and park the pickup closer to the back door when I heard the click click click of his toenails on the hardwood kitchen floor coming in to me as he always does. 

Yes he still goes down on his back end and I still have to help him in to the Ranger and pickup and at 4 o'clock into our bed. 

But he is happy and I believe pain free and made it through cow work this morning and branding this afternoon. 

I know the end is drawing near but I will give him my all as he has given me his, his entire life.

I owe him that.

That’s exactly how I felt about Bailey.  It’s tough knowing the end is near we all know the countdown is on from the time we get them but it’s still a hard time when the day comes. 
 

Haven’t gotten another dog here yet. Does seem a little empty coming home and no one but the cat to greet us. Still find myself looking for her to give her a table scrap at supper and little things like that.

Some may wonder why we would put ourselves through the heartache of owning a pet only to know that it will hurt so much when have to let them go. 

Those people do not know the true love that fills a hole in our souls that only a dog can fill.

I have been through this many times and each time it gets harder to say goodbye. 

 There is a place in each us that is reserved for a dog. 

Only a dog can fill that spot. 

There is another place for horses but that is for another thread. 

When I held Clay's puppy the other day, my heart melted. 

There is a connection that is God given. 

Everyone says to get a puppy quick is the best way to deal with the loss of a loved dog. 

But I think there is a period we need to observe, to respect.

When the time is right, a puppy will find it's way to us. 

Honestly can't say I have picked out many dogs. They have picked me. 

When the time is right, I hope that special new puppy finds you too!

Very true. We’ve never actually gone and gotten a dog ourselves. Either strays show up and stay or family and friends have gotten us one. They seem to find us one way or another.  Pretty much all of them have been great companions and special in their own way.

I really appreciate your posts Jeff, gives insight into life and how tough those inclines get at times, an awful lot of people cannot vocalize it and you are among friends 😊

Ive been around a lot of humorous people and you sir are near the top, right now going through another side just as real and really feel your offerings when your in a place to write it down, it really give perspective and should remind us to take joy when things are good and comfort and love when times are not

We lost our baby of 11 years to cancer in March, was tough and still is but got a new fur baby yesterday, another beagle. 10 weeks old

Loosing a pet can be devastating. Lost enough through the years. Worst one was a big lazy black lab that was scared to death of guns. Just a good old companion dog. Never begged for food when I was BBQing. Just sat there happy to be near you and content with a pat on the head. Old age got him. First time I fired up the grill after he died I almost cried when he didn't show up just to hang out.

That's Gracie with Cat. We have Cat, Cat Too (because it's also a cat) and Something Different. When my wife rescued the last kitten she told me I had to name it. I said I'd have to think about as Cat3 didn't sound funny. She replied "No, you have to name it something different!". I said OK, Something Different it is. Cat and Something Different go in and out as they desire. Both are gentle as can be in the house and will even seek attention outside but both are serial killers and will kill anything small enough for them to kill.
