Some of the old farmers still use medicinal variants while others use traps like these - these are great if you live in an area where you might worry about someones dog stepping in a conventional leg hold trap - i have relocated about 20 i the past yr. I have seen a couple of the wary coons stick their had thru the side of the havaheart cage wire, grab a handfull of cat food off the pedal and spring the trap. Might be what is h appening, my cat will sneak in there, and get a nibble off the pan and never set off the trap. Large dogs feet are usually too big to fit in the hole but don’t bet on it. leg hold traps in general are pretty in humane especially if you don’t check them at least twice in the night . How big is he supposed to get? 20 to 25lbs hes a mini - he is really doing well, he is 12wks - already sits, lays, on command, working on the Stay thing and he is picking it right up obviously by sitting on the scale. He laid at my feet while we were playing cards last night for about 45 mins till he got up and roamed around the house a bit. Of course being a puppy he is ready to go at a moments notice - my daughter lives in town with her mom so I dont get to see him a bunch but she is doing a great job with him, she is a senior in HS. He has only had a couple accidents indoors so far she told me. He likes to ride around in her truck with her. He is pretty obedient for a puppy and smart. I raised labs for 12 yrs and seems as attentive and easy to train like them. Im pretty impressed honestly, I was around a couple FULL SIZED Australian's working for farmers growing up and they were extremely loyal, very smart, and both would fight anything that was in their territory. They will chew their leg off if given enough time. i havent had a dog get in one of the coon cuff style, i suppose a tiny dog could? - a #1 or #11 on up could easily catch a k9 so i dont use those around the neighborhood those only get used on the farm - i always thot i would catch a ferel cat in one of the coon cuffs but none as of yet. no opossums either just coons. I use cat food, marshmellows, anything that drops down in there easily works just fine. interestingly enough while I have had a coon chew out from an old school foothold I have never had one chew out of a coon cuff. i plan to do more trapping when i retire it was such a great time when I was a kid. likely for decoration and presents 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

poor farmer/logger Posted August 13, 2021 Share Posted August 13, 2021 Little bit of a sad update to my previous dog posts, we lost our golden retriever today. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure a little over a month ago. We had her or meds and they were helping but she has been having a bit of a hard time some days. She needed help to get up but was fairly mobile once you got her going. She’d still follow mom around anywhere and was happy to be with. Just the other day we went to leave and I had her out walking before I put her back in the house. Dad brought the truck up and she ran over and stood up in the door wanting to go too. I said to mom as long as she’s trying I hate to put her down and she did give it her all right up till the end. She passed away sleeping this afternoon. Spent the afternoon building a box for her to be burried in. The cats feeling a little lonesome tonight too I think. He laid by her most of the day after we covered her up with a blanket. We’ve had her for 9 years and she was 2-3 years old when we got her. She was definitely part of the family. Dug a hole with the excavator and laid her to rest first thing this morning. They don’t ask for much but they sure give a lot. Oddly enough we’ve never gotten a dog ourselves, they always seem to find us. Either strays or friends of the family. Bailey belonged to friends of my sister and they were keeping her at the lake. They couldn’t let her run free as she wanted to and it broke their heart to tie her up so my sister told them I think I know of the perfect spot for her. I’m sure I’m time another stray from the Rez will wander in or someone will try to give us one to keep again. 😂😂 I can assure you you’ll be safe and shown the best time I can lol.
