I think CIHTECH may be on to something....how does the park work? Was it repaired at some point that you know of?

Park doesn't work? There is your answer. As soon as I saw the picture, park is where I went, the others beat me to it.

Dollars to donuts that is your parking pawl pivot pin.

120749C1 PIN,19.05mm OD x 58.42mm L

19 millimeters is just a whisker away from 3/4", and I cannot find anything else in the range transmission or rear end of a 986 that is 3/4" in diameter.

Honestly, taking the range cover off is not that bad of a job.  Clean off the accumulated crud BEFORE you take off the cover, put a 3/4" shim underneath the park linkage on top of the range cover, disconnect your linkages, and lift it up out.

DO NOT pry the cover up if it does not come loose freely.  I have seen firsthand what happens then ( the previous owner of my 1586 did that, AND many other sins!).

The plate on the side for the transfer case (or the transfer case if 4wd) can be removed also to look inside, but I am guessing that you need to pull the range cover and replace the parking pawl pivot pin.

Good luck.  And remember that we like pictures!!
