I'm just curious, have you had any law enforcement ask to review your ELD? I got stopped the other night, was having trouble with my trailer lights and he read me the riot act about putting myself out of service the next town up the road. All he asked to see was my CDL. Not a word about logs, electronic or paper. He was a sheriff's deputy, haven't been stopped by a trooper or DOT since the mandate went into effect.

I can only remember a DOT asking to see my log once. Usually they never do. Had an officer ask to see it once when when he saw the scale ticket I provided was from the day before, and the only other time someone asked to see it was at a port of entry in Idaho when I was a little heavy on my trailer. I still use paper logs (loose leaf) because 99% of what I haul is cattle.

In Nebraska only Carrier enforcement officers can do anything about log books enforment. Its the same in most states.  Most states state troopers county sheriffs and city cops can only stop you for things like speeding, lights out and things like that. They can stop you  and say they stopped you for a light blinking or some other made up thing, but they have to call Carrier Enforcement to look your log book over or inspect the truck or trailer.

I might be mistaken but I’m thinking that NH state troopers can and do ask for logbooks.

I think the E-LOG thing is just phase 1. Phase 2 will be win the enforcement officers can scan your truck while driving by you.

Log your five or six day week. TAKE YOUR LOG OUT OF THE TRUCK AT THE END OF THE WEEK! Next Monday when you start, write “Off Duty 12-16 through 12-23” on the first page. Then start logging your day. Use a loose leaf log book. You only need seven days of log with you. That’s how livestock haulers have done it for years. Will it pass a DOT audit? No. Will it pass if you get stopped out on the road?  Yes. If you get audited you will need a couple more names to use for the 22 days out of the 30 that you can’t log yourself.

Disclaimer: I have never falsified a log book, but I can read the rules and figure out a way around. Like I said before, regulations make excellent liars out of hard working people.

Edit: the above scenario could work for an owner-operator, but if you’re driving a company truck I guess your SOL.

My elog still records the truck movement wether it’s in the truck or not. You would have to remove the little black box( mines gray) as well.

Elogs aren’t the problem its the antiquated hours of service that are. There’s days I feel I could drive 15 hours and others where 4 is enough.

Sorry jass i disagree there. Anytime the government is telling me what i can and cant do its a problem. I should be able to run paper if i want. Im not trying to say some laws reguarding things like murder shouldnt be there but regulatorily speaking we are opressed!

Lots of groups to blame the screwed up hours of service regs. Unions, railroads, etc.

I do agree with Jass. Some days you can set back and run off 7-800 miles no problem. Other days 70 miles is a chore.

Pompous people that claim to know whats best for me. They tell me when i am awake and when i am sleepy. They make me take a 30 minute break so my work day takes a half hour longer and nothing more. Irritating.....

I’ve been on Elogs for 13 years other than occasionally having to use paper in a rental truck and believe me so much nicer punching a button than drawing lines and marking cities or towns while I don’t agree with the factor of having to take a break or stop at 14 hours of work.

Ya i know that way it is but when fuel gets up over 4$ a gallon sometimes a guys gotta run over hours to make ends meet cause all loads dont always pay a profit to get ya home or to the next drop or load. Elogs dont let ya. Yes i am saying i have ran over hours and dodged a scale here n there. The government has no business telling when im fit to drive an elogs allow them to do just that.

I think that elogs should only be allowed if ALL cars in the country have the same thing in them with a sensor that senses irratic driving and disables them when  unsafe driving happens

Bingo!  Or if the driver has been awake for more than 16 hours or didn’t sleep well last night or any other reason they would use to shut down a TRUCK.

I drove from the outer banks NC to southern Iowa straight thru this fall in a car. No problem. But the truck would have taken 2 days. Ridiculous...i know when i can and when i cant.

Uncles been driving regional for decades.  Always irks him that you can have a serious injury, go to ER and the Resident treating you is on a 24hr rotation and may not of slept for 22hrs.  Thats ok to try to save a life but he cant drive a truck professionally 15hr a day.

My route is 380 miles a day five days a week with insurance and pension ends up at $135k a year. Just got to find the right job and elogs no problem

Right there is my issue. I cannot do dedicated. Way too monontonous for me. I tried it for two years. By the end of the 2nd year i was ready to never touch a semi again. It almost ruined me for trucking which i still do part time. I made decent money but it wasnt worth it. When i quit we were getting paid more to move high dollar achitectural sheet metal all over the u.s so again elogs wouldve been no good for me. Fuel prices are good now. A guy can make good money but just wait til their not and those of us who enjoy working for ito's with no gps tracking and new and different challenges daily hooked to different styles of trailers hauling different types of freight will have issues. Your making great money so thats awesome! I live in a world without governers, elogs, and gps and thats where im happiest in a rig. If i couldnt have that i wouldnt do it period.

The whole system has been patched so many times and so many exceptions made its become a burden.  I understand that the original intent was to make sure that semi truck drivers were not falling asleep at the wheel, got it.  We have gone so far past that now.

At work we drive company welding trucks, this means that we have to run a log.  We work twelve hour days. This doesn’t work.  Now I ship the welding trucks and we drive pick ups.

My truck drivers are limited to 10 hour days since if they work over they are at risk  of being shut down, crazy.  (They have to not go over hours in 8 days. Alaska runs 80 hours in 8 days). And we have been audited several times, the not says “send this employee’s log books and certified payroll to us”. Try to explain why they were paid more hours than they logged.

Mechanic for the chopper was Dot'ed in new York last year.. didn't have a log book for his service truck (550 size ?). He was taking to a hotel, they let him have the keys back 8 hours later...... very frustrating

He was expected to be at our place that evening. Wasn't until the next morning

Yep, we are looking at getting rid of our cually trucks.  Here is one for you, our mechanic fleet truck is the 3500 Duramax and utility box,  over 14,000#.  Log book or sell it

I have had them check the elog. We used to have Peoplenet. They could enter a company code(i had to provide it) on their computer and bring up my logs. Now our logs are on an Ipad so we can bring them right in the chicken coup for the nosy buggers.

Loose leaf logs were good money makers.....

mine is on a tablet also so it is portable...I have noticed that you can edit certain "events" on your log for the day, but there are some restrictions.

For example, the other day I forgot to log off so went I went to log on the next moring @ 4m, it was putting me in a 14hr. violation.  I just simply went back and edited my last activity in my home dock & put me to off duty.  I tried it yesterday also, but the GPS had me moving, so it did not work :)

I don’t think it will let you edit after you’ve signed that log page. Mine use to let me edit non-driving stuff without having to submit a comment, but now it makes me comment before accepting the edit. Driving entries were essentially carved in stone?
