redneckchevy9
I realize it our right to vote or not, but I simply don't understand why some folks don't vote. Am I missing something? Not trying to make a political post...**** I barely follow politics.
IHRunner
In a sense. Freedom has made us soft. And apathetic. Some. Not all. Im one of those bouncy voters who checks left and right sides of a ballot. But most people my age are sick of the political bullshite.

iowaboy1965
I think too may people feel like it wont do any good or they are all crooked.....all reasons we ALL should vote imo. Mudfly
Mike Rowe has an interesting take on voting and why he does NOT tell anyone to vote even though they have the right to do so. I pretty much agree with him. If you are informed and want to go vote, and legally can vote, by all means please do so. If you are a blubbering idiot that gets all your information from a one sided political show (either side of the isle), from celebrities, or have no knowledge what so ever, maybe you should skip it. I believe this is the link.
cjf711
This is a bad reason probably as its part of the issue maybe but... My House district went 83%R to 17%D, I liked the D candidate, seemed like a sensible guy but, there was no chance. The Governor race was a D Landslide that was known in advance. won by something like 600k votes, and honestly i didnt care for either candidate. either will screw our state further into the ground I think, flip a coin and buckle in.. it really doesnt matter. All my locals ran in the 80% R range with in many cases no other option running against the R candidate. No good moderate candidates. All lined up with Trump, which is fine if they REALLY believe that stuff, but, do they really? I mean... how is that possible... After the districts got redrawn in the house races it has pretty much locked us into a Hard R candidate... As a registered D, I dont vote in the R primary which is really all that matters at this point. Presidential elections, senate elections can be closer, but, none this year, so, I hauled manure instead of voting.
Missouri Mule
I’m kind of on board with Mike Rowe. I feel like a whole lot of people vote that have no business voting. Right now in Missouri with the medical marijuana lots of people came out of the wood works. ?♂️ How can we pick and choose? We cannot. Is it their right to vote? Sure. I feel like the only solution is awareness. Talk to neighbors and friends as neutral as I know how to and let them decide based on facts not here say. I try to do what I can based on what little I know. I worry about our future for sure.
lorenzo
The short answer to the question “ why not vote”? is because a certain percent of the population is convinced that .#1. Their vote won’t matter. #2. It doesn’t matter who is in the office because none of the elected officials are able to actually do what they were campaigning anyway. Now before you pile on , remember , the above comment has nothing to do with how you or I feel , but based on 20 years teaching at a local Comunity college and interacting with that age group. lorenzo
It would be interesting to know if voter turn out percentages are higher ,lower , or about the same in other countries .

mrblanche
I personally vote for the same reason I would punch in the nose a bear who was trying to eat me. Not because I think it will change the outcome, but because I don't want them thinking I approve of what they're doing. That said, have you read Heinlein's original "Star Ship Troopers?" In that book the only way you could vote was to have completed a 10-year hitch in the military. Once you join, you can quit at any time, if you want to. The military will not release you without your request, no matter what happens to you. And you can't vote as long as you're still in the military. Seems like a good idea; those who are willing to defend the government have the right to vote on it, but not as long as their vote would have any effect on the military. Kind of like saying you can't vote as long as the government is supporting you. And that would include any government support, including welfare, military retirement, social security, etc. Radical ideas. But then, Heinlein COULD be radical. yellowrosefarm
In Virginia when you register to vote you are added to the juror pool. Doesn't mean you will actually serve, but you are in the pool. A number of my friends do not register to vote because of this. An unintended consequence of this is that jurors can end up being as political in the courtroom as they are at the ballot box. Deciding a verdict looking at the facts with either ultra left or right glasses on is not a good thing. I like the idea of drawing jurors from drivers licenses better, though in urban areas you would be missing a lot of people, I suspect.
Indy Farmer
I think it's silly on multiple fronts. Don't like R or D? Like your non-vote will send a message. Won't vote because a third party has no chance? News flash, NO @#$%! How do you think we'll get any change at all by either not voting or by voting the same crap every two years?
