Great list!

I still can't understand why they put the 436 engine @ 190hp in the 1480, then took them until 1981 to finally go to the 466. They were sooooo underpowered.

Rice combines came with the rice rotor (later replaced by the specialty rotor), no grain tank extension, raised leveling auger, larger rice and cane tires, special steering axle or mud hog, long feeder house, serrated feeder chain, swing up ladder, long unloading auger. I would have to look it up for more specifics.

The rice combines are given a special section in the brochures. There was also a 1420 rice combine but they are rare. I have only seen one but 715 rice combines were common, I have a dead one.

Externally a 1460 looks like a 1440 due to the small grain tank (there is a short extension at the front of the tank). However it has large front and rear tires, a raised leveling auger and a long unloading tube.

WOW!  I feel smarter just having read SuperIH's post.  We should make this a sticky post so it stays on the first page for quick reference without having to do a search for it.  Just typing that all out was a big chore I bet.

ST-470 - Back in those days, late '70's, '80 & '81 with ag, namely Farmall, East Moline, and trucks ALL going like gangbusters Melrose Park was exceeding their capacity.  Trucks used lots of 466's, and 3588's too.  Melrose was happy to have Farmall and E. Moline buy some Nuess engines and relieve the demand from them. The few months in '79 I dealt with Melrose nobody took the time to explain to me WHY I could get some displacements easier than others.  Product Forcasting that worked right next to us sent a schedule to Melrose every month of what we were going to build and at what rate, so many per day,  I monitored daily shipments and the stock expediter  just called when he was getting low on an engine, I'd call Melrose and let them know to ship heavy on that engine or I'd call the Big boss the next day.  Had a discussion with Melrose's Traffic Manager one day about using other brand engines in a Farmall.  He suggested a Detroit 2-stroke.  "Ohhh, Heck NO.  Cummins if  not a CAT."  Couple years later when I was driving, picking up a load of engines I stopped in and said Hi to him.

Neat list. Hoober's used to have a similar timeline, but it doesn't seem to be on their redesigned webpage anymore. I agree with Doc Evil, BJ(FarmallFan) should pin this post somewhere as there are a lot of posts on here inquiring about all the changes from year to year, model series to model series. This would answer many of them. I can think of some additions that I will probably add along the way, but it is a great list overall.

A 466 will wake up a 1460!

we bought a 1640 summer of 1991 as a 1991 serial # and was told she was the first year of the junk 5.9L cummins and that if we had found a carry over 1990 it would've had a DT436,,,, but I never knew for sure..

What Other folks have said about Pinning to the front is a great Idea.  We have a 1660 with a                                                                             466,  My serial number is at the end of production for 466's, wondered where it fell in line at.

1986---"Separating area increased by 24% on 1620, 32% on 1640 and 1660, 41% on 1680"

please explain? I'm pretty sure the long shoe machines came out in 1990 when the CDC engine came out, AND the logo change from big black model numbers to small numbers. I think all 3 occured at once.

I know my 1480 seive, shoe parts will fit in an early short shoe 1680.

also 1985. Cabs tops were painted red, and they were Case IH machines.

Might be talking about the increased size of concaves.

The separating area increase in the 1600 series was due to all the extra holes in the back half of the cage that the 1400s didn’t have. 

Also, the first CDC/Cummins engined 1680s did NOT have the long sieve. I’ve got a couple short sieve, Cummins-engined 1680s around here.
