bitty
Good buy here. If it's a series II engine that's even better deal. If it's got a replacement Kohler Magnum better yet
drglinski
It only has one hydraulic lever, which tells me it doesn't have the outlets at the front. No indication what motor it has. Hard to tell if it's made by IH or CCC. (IMO the IH ones are more desirable because they have a cast iron rear end and you can mount more attachments to it like a tiller vs the CCC built aluminum ones.) IMO it's a 400-500 dollar tractor tops.

ny bill o
you can spend $500 for a yellow CC. a couple extra hundred for a red one is an easy choice.
Red 56 Turbo
Looks like an IH built one if the frame hasn't been replaced. The serial number tag is smaller, indicative of IH built. CCC had the larger serial number tag. Don't forget, early CCC's had cast iron rearends because they used up the parts on hand before throwing in aluminum rearends. I'd try to find out if it still has the Series 1 in it or if it was replaced with a Series 2 or Mag 18. If series 1, he's on high end of price. If series 2 or Mag18, the price is pretty fair. Of course if it does run as good as stated. Good luck!

lightninboy
It looks restorable. When they get this old, they're better for restoring than using if they're still good enough to restore.

I am brand loyal on my muscle cars (although i am still on a quest to buy a certain 1st gen Camaro i know about). I am not brand loyal after that. I do prefer Dodge trucks but for cars the last 3 have been Impalas. I have owned.. 1 ford 1 olds 1 pontiac 1 buick The most reliable vehicle i have ever owned was a 97 Dodge Intrepid. Aside from normal tires and brakes i spent less than $100 in repairs over 175k miles. The worst was the Ford. Thank heavens it was under warranty. Got out of it before the warranty ran out. And now back to the main subject... What years were the good red mowera built and when did they switch to cheaper parts?? Always thought the were a nice looking machine. You do know I'm just pullin yer chain.......I will tell you the same thing I told my kids about FORD. Rear wheel drive were good right up through the LTS's and Lincolns. So were the trucks. Mostly their front wheel drive left a lot to be desired. I owned 2 Chrysler products at once........my first and my last. We did drive and LTD and a Lincoln Town Car right up to 245K with nothing more than alternators and a water pump. And every GM product we've had we ran well over 200K, one to 312 at trade (yea we traded that one). That one besides a starter and alternator had a few other minor problems and the Transmission at 258K. Kinda sad the path the Garden tractor has taken. What were good machines for what they were designed for are just no longer desirable when compared to the offerings from CaseIH/NH, JD, Kubota and AGCO. Always liked the looks of the early red Cubs. Rainman
A few months ago, Son got a red 782, dual hydraulics, w/18 Mag, 54" hydraulic turn plow, Sleeve hitch & cast rear weights (no mower) $1,000. The mower on pictured 782 is newer 44C deck. I got a red 782 for $250, but only had one good rod in a KT17 series 1.
Cattech
It does appear th be an IH built 782, that's a plus. The tin looks as straight as could be, that is getting harder to find every day. Good rubber from what I can see. If it is an IH built unit, I would guess you could part it out at that price and still break even. You won't find a better built garden tractor except for some Deere brethren. Downsides, even with that newer mower deck you aren't going to get a golf course cut. I was a Cadet tech in the 90s and they still hadn't built a deck that would cut with a Deere or Toro. The Red Cadets had a superior turning radius to the earlier tractors, but that didn't make them nimble. I'm not a fan of any opposing twin engine from that era - run smooth enough but hard on fuel and short on lugging power. I would snap it up for that price, I don't see you losing any money on it, except for contracting a restoration bug.
