1466 Rebuild

Its a 1975 1466 that I've had for about 8-9 years now.  I have had plans to paint it since the day I bought it and finally talked myself into following through.  Took about two months to do and just let the rest of my world stop while I focused on it (along with working a full time job).  This tractor is used to side dress 28% on all the corn so as soon as I got done with that, it hit the shop and I had a deadline to meet the farmstock class at the county fair tractor pull.  Took 6th place among a bunch of dedicated pulling tractors that claim to be farmstock so I was happy.

Anyway, its a great tractor.  The clock shows almost 9000 hours but I have no idea how correct that is.  When I got it, you could tell the head had been off along with the injection pump, PTO, one axle housing, etc..  Pretty sure it was originally a cab tractor too.  Lots of things just pieced together with things missing and a mixed up bunch of bolts.  I finally got it all back together with all those little things taken care of.  I tried to do a mostly original looking restoration but I use this tractor a lot so I wasn't willing to give up a few mods like the K&M step and KC lights in the front and back of the fenders.  I just put brand new Firestone radials on the back and IH 10-bolt dual hubs off of a 4386.  It has 18.4x38 and 10.00x16.  I've had a lot of people try to talk me into 20.8s or 42" rims but i love the look just he way it is plus this combo works well for side dressing!  

It's not 100% done yet but close.  I have one more set of wheel weights to go on and a full rack for the front.  Right now, it has a K&M seat suspension but plan to rebuild the original.  I picked up some 10-bolt duals so I'll get them painted and mounted up soon.

Man, that tractor is beautiful!  I am curious about the serial number, though.  You said you think it is a '75 model?  Their are a few visual clues that lead me to think it is an earlier production than that.  Chrome shift levers and vented radiator side covers are the ones that come to mind.  I think by '75, the shift levers were black and the side panels were solid and not vented.  Not that it matters, I'm just curious about serial number.

Serial number 26501.  My local dealer confirmed it was a '75.  I agree about the shift levers and vented side panels but those were what it had when I got it.  No sign of black paint under the silver when I sanded them down either.  Maybe all that was off of another tractor.  As I mentioned, it seemed like there were lots of things pieced together on this tractor.  Right or wrong, I put it back together just how I found it.  I didn't put a ton of concern into things like that since it is still going to get used a lot.

I like the chrome shift levers.  I was just curious since those changes have been the subject of debate.

Haha, yeah it worked great.  I can't take credit for the idea, it was from a friend of mine.  I will say though, 12 weights is just about too much on one drum.  Next time I do it, I'll get two of them.  It was hard to get paint down in the area that hooks over the edge but I did get it.

I also thought I would note the turbo blanket.  New paint and a turned up pump is not good for the side panel.  It is pretty easy to discolor the paint and decal right by the turbo.  I was able to find a cheap turbo blanket and exhaust wrap for the elbow to keep the heat off of the panel.  It was only $23 found on the internet labeled as a "T3 blanket".  It fit perfectly.  Now time will tell if it really works but I am confident at the moment.

Three coats of base, and two coats of clear.  The red and the clear are Matrix brand.  I ran into quite a bit of trouble with the colors.  The red is 2150 but it sure doesn't match the rattle can of 2150 I picked up at the CaseIH dealer but its not terribly far off.  I do like how it turned out though.  Matrix couldn't cross the 935 white so I went with PPG for it.  It was way off and I couldn't stand it so I mixed up my own version by adding some other white I had left over from another project.  Totally guessed on how I thought it should look and I got very lucky because my mix matches a can from the dealer pretty close.  Overall, I'm very happy with the colors even though they are not 100% correct.  Of course, who knows if what you get at the dealership really matches what left the factory in 1975?  I'm a big Matrix paint fan now, especially the clearcoat, and would suggest it to anyone.  If you are really serious about colors through, just get a can of the cheap stuff from the dealer and have it matched with good base coat.

It is basically just a K&M mechanical suspension with a stock replacement 3-piece seat.  I put that suspension and a K&M seat on it when I got the tractor.  Never really liked it all that well because it pushes the seat forward too much and sits too high for me, even kinda making it hard to get on and off since it does not have a tilt wheel.  I know others have the same complaints.

What I did to make it acceptable was slot the mounting holes in the very bottom bracket cut off quite a bit off in the right rear corner so I could move it as far back as I could without causing interference with the suspension parts.  That helped a huge amount and like it much better.

Another option is to use the K&M air suspension.  My dad has it on his 1066 and loves it but it is quite a bit more money.

Long term, I plan to rebuild the OEM suspension and put that back on just because I don't care for the looks of the aftermarket set-up.
