I agree, they just bought a business and my opinion is that they want to put "their" people in place or keep the purchased employees cheaply otherwise they dont care and without laying you off no unemployment needed. I went through this 10ish years ago at the dealer I was lead tech at the new guys offered me a $5 per hour pay cut, so that afternoon I made a couple calls and had $3 pay raise at a new shop
russ
used to work at a box plant called Smurfit-Stone after a hostile stock take over it became Rock-Tenn and now West-Rock but was shut down while still Rock-Tenn. with nothing else in a 30 mile radius that pay'd anything close to what I had been making I started to look further afield and found this job at Metalsa making more than I was by 1.50 per hour better ins. and 3 weeks vac. Now 7 years into this I've got all my vacation back "5 weeks" and my hourly rate has nearly doubled 18.99 per hr at Rock-Tenn to 30.95 per hr doing the same thing for both company's millwright and electrician for lack of a better term fixit, man keep it running at all cost's man, and the moral of todays story is God never slams a door that He doesn't open another. think, ask, investigate, information is your friend here you've still got plenty of time to find the right "job" for you and your family having the time now while children are small and at home is a good thing not only for them memories are made now not later for I was told this many years ago wish I had listened for now my kids are grown and gone. its not all about money $$$! Family should come first! Rant over russ
Missouri Mule
I recently had the opportunity to change jobs within my company. I went from swing shift to straight days. Sounds good right? Well I took a decent pay cut hourly and went from all the o/t you can handle to very little o/t. Since I worked every shift they offered me this is a SUBSTANTIAL pay cut at the end of the year. My wife and I talked it out and she decided she would rather take the cut in pay and have me around more often and not so crabby because of working all odd hours AND trying to farm. I figured out after about 36 hours awake on my feet my legs just prettt well quit on me! My point is I kinda know where your at somewhat. I see my family every day now and that’s everything to me. I have a normal schedule now and like it. My point is if this new job will make you happier and allow you to spend more time with family and the pay cut won’t break you... GO FOR IT. Cattech
You like driving a truck - understandable, it's as much a disease as farming and hard to get out of your blood. My dad drove right up until he was 76, and it has taken a few yrs for him to not miss it. You also must like agriculture to a point, you are on a forum mainly populated by people who collect farm tractors. So, driving truck for an agricultural company that is well established and sounds like a stable employer.... A small cut in pay usually doesn't hurt as bad as a person thinks it would. You make a little less, but the tax man doesn't take as much. And as others have said above, you may be able to negotiate, it is an employee's market right now. Maybe you won't get everything, but meet somewhere in the middle? That said, I wouldn't dismiss the interior design talent you speak of either. This could be a lucrative talent to exploit. But I would be wary of taking a salary job doing it. As other have pointed out and I know from experience, it's amazing how much overtime you have to put in once they don't have to pay for it. So, start a side business doing the interior design. If it works out, maybe it could become a full time job. A friend of mine went to school for mechanical drafting. He moved down to the big city and got a real good job in the field. But city life wasn't for him, so he moved back up north. He has worn many hat's since then, from laborer to plumbing and even back to drafting. One day, with no warning, he was laid off. As luck would have it, his brother was doing sales for a remodeling contractor. He said the company was making a killing, ridiculous profit margins and customers standing in line. So, my buddy and his brother started their own contracting business. Fair prices, honest work, professional conduct. In just a couple short yrs they have multiple crews with 20 employees, and are making more money than either has ever made in their life.
