My Winter Project- 5488 Rebuild

Dirt is worked, crops are in and sprayed and growing so now I finally have some time to post my project from last winter.

My 5488 has around 2500 hours now, about 400 hrs on an engine major, having owned it for 3 years now I've been slowly rebuilding it to like new condition.  I purchased the tractor with a known oil leak between the speed and range housings.  Come to find out the trans had been updated but whom ever put the tractor back together did not get the bolts holding the speed and range together tight letting the gasket behind the auxiliary fuel tank push out and leak oil.  All of the bolts were very loose.  I've been collecting parts for the last couple of years getting ready to split and fix the leak, check the trans and add updates that I wanted, so here we go!

Day before tear down, washing the corn field off the tractor!

Found this valve and spring in the PPH pump suction line, followig pic is where it was supposed to go and this is what they are supposed to look like installed with this wanky spring washer.  I ended up putting a washer on the valve stem and a bead of weld so that it cannot come off again.

This is a lube line that oils the hydraulic pump drive gears.  It had been rubbing on the gears and the end was gone which allowed lube oil to dump out, the line is supposed to be crimped and just a little oil allowed through the little hole like the replacement part show above the broken one

Getting the speed housing cleaned and ready for assembly, exhaust manifold blasted and ready for paint and the Hi/Lo rebuilt and ready to go back in.  The speed trans had been updated with the aftermarket update by a previous owner so I only needed to replace the clutches.  I completely rebuilt the speed trans while we had it apart, new seals, bearings etc.  The master clutch was also rebuilt.

Engine stripped, injectors pulled and rebuilt and the new S2E turbo setting next to the stock turbo.  The S2E fit well, I ended up shortening the compressed air tube that connects the turbo to the intercooler, had to cut in half and remove 5/8" then tig welded back together.

The injection pump is a NOS 5488 pump from Danny at Dirtboys, then sent it to Ed Guenther and let him work his magic!  I told Ed I hated the droop in these engines, he took care of that with a different torque capsule, fine tuned the aneroid and then turned the pump up as far as possible.  This is now a whole new tractor, more power, exhaust temps run a good 100 degrees less and burn no more fuel than before, plus I can let the clutch out in road gear and the tractor just takes off, no falling on its face, just a little smoke, lol

The tractor only had 3 hydraulic remotes, I've been collecting NOS parts to add the 4th remote, plus a new console plastic cover.

Had to pull the entire valve stack, NOS priority valve replace the old one plus NOS remote valves to replace number 3 and add number 4.  You can see why the valves have to all be pulled, lots of crap collects between them and they all loosen up when the bolts are removed

Going back together, every rubber line, compressed air hose, coolant hose, hydraulic line was replaced and sheathed with braided protectant, much better than the corrigated plastic from the factory.  All hoses got new all stainless clamps put on them.  The steering hand pump was resealed, new rubber isolators and U-Joint (ouch on the price $500 new), new battery cables, clutch and throttle cables, engine wire harness

Accept for the condenser and evaporator everything in the A/C system was replaced, new Sanden pump, hoses, switches, etc.  Pulled a vacuum on the system and the gauge never moved for 7 days so we added oil and 134A and she blows cold all the time now!  Ended up going with a shorter V-belt to run the compressor, the factory belt lets the compressor set too close to the side panels and it will rub.

Replaced the harmonic balancer, oil pump o-rings, radiator and all hoses, cab mounts, put new teflon bushed heim joints on all shifting linkages, clutch control crank arm was cleaned blasted and the shoulder bolt was coated with Moly Kote dry lubricant.

Getting ready to fire up for the first time and check for leaks.

I had posted in another thread that the steering ended up being terribly stiff after resealing the hand pump.  I actually wanted to replace the hand pump but were no longer available through IH, got this new one through Midwest Steering and it is awesome!

Done and back in the field, all window and door seals were replaced and I added more foam to the interior of the cab, it is much quieter now which is needed when running without a muffler at almost 300 horse.  I put new trunnion bushing in the front axle, resealed the steer cylinders and replaced all of the steer cylinder ends, she is nice and tight again.  Also put a rebuilt 2 speed PTO in, the large 1000 rpm shaft was pretty much useless to me.  Did a bunch of wiring upgrades, new shift solenoids, and replaced a whole bunch of o-rings at any O-Ring Boss fittings.  This tractor was from Oklahoma and leaked everywhere from hard dried out seals, but not anymore, doesn't leave a drop on the floor.

Great job on the rebuild! I agree that those NOS injection pumps from Danny are awesome, we put one on our 52 and set it at about 300 hp like you and now it only burns .25-.3 gal/acre pulling a 12/23 planter.

Luke,. Looking very good!!  It takes alot of work to get one of these 50 series back to tip top shape.  4 remote looks great,. The hardest thing to find is the steel lines back to the valves,. Just wasn't alot of them made that way.

Looks good, thanks for the pictures and showing the work in action as it went.

Matt
