Tying the 5488 to the ground

I've fought power hop with my 5488 since I've owned it, been all over with tire air pressure to make it the best I could but with the rear tires not filled with fluid I simply needed more weight on the back of the tractor.

So, this was my project yesterday while enjoying the 92 degree heat here in Central Michigan, ugh!

We sweat our butts off, pulled the duals, dual hubs, then slide the main wheel out, added these wheel weights to the outside that weigh 950 lbs each and also put 3 sets of split weights on the inside of the wheel, then slide back in and started tightening wedge locks down.  Took two of us around 4 hours to finish the job on both sides, adding a total around 2700 lbs to the back of the tractor.

The thing we found with our 8950 with 1846 radial Firestone duals when moldboard plowing we would lower the rear tires down to 6 PSI and I think the front 16:9 are 30s we ran at 12 or 14 with a full rack of 22 front weights.  We had the steel dish inner and outer real wheels and no additional weights besides the full rack on the front we had no power hop there. Total weight at 23,600 . I am not sure if the wheelbase is similar to the Magnums though

This 31' vibrashank is what it hops the most with, in chisel plowed ground not as bad because there isn't as much traction, but I fit 60 acres that we moldboard plowed last fall and it hopped non-stop.  The front end is doing more than its fair share of the work basically pulling the tractor and as soon as it hits a bump and starts bouncing you better be reaching for the throttle!

That should tie it down. If it doesn't I don't know how much more a guy would dare add. Beautiful tractor sir!

I have a set of those big weights and eight sets of wheel weights with cast 20.8-42 duals I don't use the front wheels much any more tractor weighs 26700

Got any pics of that set up?

I would have liked to put the big ones on the inside, not sure if they would have fit the dish of the wheel though.  It looked like 4 sets of splits on the inside would have been too close to the axle housing too, so it looks like this is as much as I could hang on it.

My big weights are on the inside they make the split weights that are for the 88 series they have a bigger center to go over the axle housing I have one weight on outside of inside wheel and seven sets on outside of dual

Your inner cast must be dished in then?

Mine is dished out and set as tight as I can to the axle housing to make it down 30 inch rows.  I have the 88 style splits, I made a cardboard template of them and they got real close to the axle housing once I got over 6 inches past the end of the housing, like less than 1/4" clearance so I only put 3 sets on instead of 4.

Looks like your 5488 runs real hard, mine is only set at 220 horse right now.
