Replacement tire options.

As many of you have read before, I'm restoring my families Farmall H.  There seems to be just a few options for tires and I was wondering what tires you guys use and why.  My goal is to have some thing that would look correct for the 40's but I don't see much that gives me hope for that so I'm just going to settle for some thing that will be American made and of good quality.  Hopefully I can make enough tractor rides, parades and plow days to wear them out!

I'm currently leaning towards the Firestone Field and Road 23 degree in 12.4-38 for the rear and the notched tri-rib Firestone fronts in 6-16.  There are a few other options for older tractors though, GY(Titan), American Farmer, Carlisle and Mitas but no one offers something truly retro like the FS Gound Grip which is why I'm leaning towards the Field and Road.

So, let me know what your thoughts are.

Thank you!

The link that Tom has posted for Miller Tire is the only other I have heard of.   I personally have always liked the Firestone 23* Field & Road, the new name is Super All Traction, SAT.   I have been using them a long time and wish I had a truck load of new ones.

I looked at the BKT but I don't think there made here.  There sure to be a great tire if Miller carries them though, the GY Duratorque is a good looking tire but didn't say if it was made here or not.

GT&T-  I've been leaning that direction but also wanted to look at other options.  So far the Firestone, GY and American Farmer have been the best looking tires I've seen, not to knock on other brands of course.

I have no idea what its about but according to Firetire's website it is the ALL traction F&R that is discontinued, the "Traction Field and Road" Is apparently available in a variety of traditional older sizes like 16.9 X 34 but not 15.5 (?). The "Field and Road" is available in a few classic sizes like 11.2  and 12.4 X38. The SATII is  the only bias 15.5 from Firestone.

Used to be just a Field & Road too, bargain basement tire,  fewer lugs, thinner plies.  It's hard to surf thru Firestone's website to see what sizes are avail in which style.  I just noticed a couple years ago the good rear tire on the M is a Traction Field & Road,  in 13.6x38 6 ply.  Slim chance of finding one around 70%!  Guess if I want matched rear tires I'd have to buy new.  SON wants 15.5's on it, I'd want either 13.6's or maybe 14.9's.

While I respect your desire to keep things made in america, I was pricing some Firestones Field & Road's  earlier today, and they're roughly 2X the price of anything else. Most of my tractors currently spend 98% of their time in a dark barn and I personally can't justify having that much money tied up in rubber that's just rotting away.

If you think the high priced tires are immune from dry rot and cracking, think again. I have Michelin radials on my Super H and they are cracking badly around the lugs, sitting in a dark barn! Good thing I only paid $400 for the pair (they showed no signs of cracking when I bought them). Otherwise I would be one unhappy camper. That tractor is what you would call "knee deep in rubber."

Matt -  do you have any idea how long those Michelin's sat before you got such an awesome deal on them?  There is supposed to be a date code on tires but every mfg's code is different.

Miller is probably the closest you will get to domestic or rubber or intended quality

buy the cheapest that looks good to you, keep covered and drive every week.... Tucker is 1 dealer of off brand

try to get radial if you are doing rides    we have been getting 2.5-3 years farm to farm vs 1 season on bias...brand etc did not matter

date code yea...BS for another scam...  that is what/ALL they used on my last truck inspection 4 years and 18K (6/10) on (6yr 80K mfg warranty Michelin)   4 yrs = dry rot automatic FAIL    they are microscopic if you really hunt,MFG gauge uses ACTUAL cracks so no warranty = no inspection   just replaced with the cheapest jap.. as mechanic said 4 years and done...while I was there a 5 year old tire was delivered direct from warehouse,,thought I was going to get the inspection:ph34r: but they caught it at install.

in talking with MFG, suppliers, 99.5% of ALL tires are foreign,or foreign owned, are not made with rubber, are not oxygen or uv stable..will fail because it is a rough world out there...2 % chance of real world recovery on ANY warranty or implied claims after all the firery  hoops to clear.

Nitrogen (air) to keep the inside soft is a BIG market, kevlar cords only last 7 years and pop which is exactly what trailer did last year  their response drive every day like you are 16 buy new @ 30K

Dr Evil

We have a set of 20.8r46 Michelin's on our 7250 and they are starting to crack. 3 years old. I like the Firestone the best

To add to the original post question. I have Galaxy earth pro on my F30 and the tread looks identical to the field and road Firestone tires. Made in China but when it comes to skidsteer tires they have always held up great for us

tiretown in kansas has factory second tires with the name buffed off. Guys have said they hold up just as well but are almost half the price.

That was a brand problem not a general issue.............not sure where you are getting your prices on f-stones either.  Just put two 15.5's on a 620 and those were just a few dollars more than two cheapo's I watch someone buy at another tire dealer.  Granted the f-stones are SATII but I would take them any day of the week over that other junk.

This has been a great debate of options and I really appreciate everyone's input!  Hope I didn't start the Great Tire Debate but it certainly gave me some insight into what direction to take.  I love seeing tractor rides and might do one some day(Mackinac Bridge Ride) but I hope to spend what ever time I can spend with it using it as it was intended.  Now I realize that this won't be nearly as much as it was built for nor will it probably ever justify the time and money put into it but it will "be ready' for no other reason other than it can.

Thanks again for everyone's help!
