Math is a progressive course. This means that students need to refer to what they learned in the previous grades in order to achieve long term success in math. Without a strong knowledge of previous math concepts, it will be difficult for students to cope in higher grades. For example, it is common practice for math tests to check for understanding of previous math concepts in most steps of the questions asked.

Word problems constitute a major concern for a lot of students. This is because they encounter difficulties when translating word problems into equations and variables. A very good approach for addressing this issue is to have students understand different word problem scenarios within a particular unit or topic, then have them identify the variables, including the unknown, and thereafter form an equation or mathematical expression from the word problem.
In Grade 10 math, students will deal with more complicated math concepts that typically involve many parts. But when a student knows which equation to use, it makes things easier.
We have a perfect strategy at QEA. we call it using the “big picture,”. This involves helping the students understand the ‘why” behind each step and concept, and when to apply the right formula. This is better than diving straight into the technical details of the course. Once the student understands the “big picture”, he or she is then able to apply them in solving the questions.

Grade 9 and 10 math is very different from elementary school math, in that new concepts are introduced. This is why it is even more difficult for those who scored 75% or lower to handle.
Thinking problems and word problems are some of the common challenges that they face in Grade 9 and 10 math. Students who do well in Grade 9 and 10 often have strong foundational skills. But if they have learning gaps, the journey is often tougher for the students. Such gaps can include integers, fractions, and linear equations. For students to succeed in Grade 11, they must work diligently in these areas.
Grade 11 Math represents an important stepping stone in progressing to the 12th grade. One of the most important decisions that students have to make here is whether to take the Mixed level math course or the Academic level math course. It is often best for students to stick with the Grade 11 Academic Math, though it requires a bit more work or a summer upgrade class. The advantage of taking this course is that it offers students a door to multiple options for university programs. If a student does not understand the path he wishes to take, it is better for him to stick with the more flexible math option.
Some of the challenging units in Grade 11 Math include exponents, transformation, trigonometry graphing, and trigonometry identities, and, of course, proofs. Simpler units include quadratics, and series and sequences. Some of these units are mostly a review of grade 10 material.
Advanced Functions is a very important course for many students because most university programs require this course as a prerequisite. The skills learned in the Grade 11 course are built upon in Advanced Functions. Typically, this includes factoring, graphing, trigonometry, and exponents. Also, students in Grade 11 will likely have varying levels of proficiency when taking Advanced Functions. This is because some units, such as polynomial functions, are relatively simple, while others, such as trigonometry and proofs are quite hard. It is for this reason that some students describe Advanced Functions as a rollercoaster ride of a course, especially with all the thrills and challenges that comes with it.
Calculus includes the derivative calculus option and the Vector Calculus option. The former mainly extends from previous work in Advanced Functions, while the later is a completely new concept. Vector Calculus bears some resemblance to Physics when it comes to problem-solving, which is why many students find it particularly difficult. The Calculus derivative section branches out from the work done in Advanced Functions, and it typically includes algebra, graphing, trigonometry, and logarithms. The vector component, on the other hand, involves 3D equations of lines and planes.
In order to succeed in Vector Calculus, make sure you are proficient in exponents, factoring, combining rational expressions such as fractions with algebra, and solving equations.
Make sure to pay special attention to the Optimization Unit in Calculus, which includes many word problems. If you struggle with word problems, make sure to prepare for this Calculus unit in particular. As always, make sure to keep your notes organized. Identify the different kinds of Calculus problems. This will help you to clarify the Calculus concepts in this course significantly, and also help to keep track of your progress.
