How the grille and front plastic IH emblem survived this long and being intact still today amazes me.

Dang I tried! Hahahahahaha! I try again on the next 14. Shes looking good! It must be cause its dryer climate down thier in texas those old girls wake up from a long nap heck up here engines can lock up in a couple years if conditions are right!

Look at BJ's project on the same page as this, I put alot of into that cab and theres just not alot of good survivors left.  I can post pictures here too but I don't want to take away from the 1086 project

I seen that he did a excellent job on that cab! I picked up a late model 86 cab (what was left) cheap at my local yard but it needs all the sheet metal i want to try redoing for my 986 i bought that was rolled! I have most parts between the two

I hate to sandblast to much of my time  personally , I hire it now , to much dust ,wear and tear on compressor ,. So what do I do for rust. Power wash clean the dirt and grease off .

I use now is a mixture of 50% water + white vinegar  and soak for few days depends on steels or cast irons  the rusted parts a then power wash , dry and paint asap with rusty primer , then that's my take on .

here is a sample of rusty Bicycle seat   soaked in vineger and water . Ohio is the capital of rust !

Were pretty rusty over here in pa. to! Haha i hate it

How about narrow front with cab?

i second the narrow front with duels id say no cab but im a original guy and if the cab isnt shot it should stay! Cab narrow front an duels and maybe a set of rear wheel weights and a whole rack up front weights would be alittle different!

Black stripes are dependent on the serial number not any of the other things you mentioned. Look at the parts book and it will tell you at such and such serial number the decal is black stripe and not the earlier model

Yes it comes down to serial number but all those things point away from being a true blackstripe!

Is that a true black stripe? Whats the serial#

I doubt it has the wrong side sheet metal has the louvers serial number tag on the bell housing and dont see the bolt holes in tge rear axle housing for the 86 series cabs! And that tractor had a cab on at one time wrong deck pto lever and steps and the oil cooler hoses dont go through the sheet metal the steel lines come half way up from the multiple control valves! Nice tractor not original though! Wish thier was a rearend pick cause it probably has wrong drawbar and 3 pt hitch to be a blackstripe!

Thanks We don't have modern tractors on the farm, can't justify it financially. Son and I do the old ones the way we want them done

Im up for adoption???? Sharp 986 the one neighbor bought one off are other neighbor about 25 years ago exact same set up had 800 hours on it when it changed hands dad wanted to buy it at the time no money in the 80s! I tried to buy it cause we farm the original owners land and i wanted one of his tractors but the current owner wants to much told me he was gonna get it running then i will see its worth that much! It now has about 2000 hours on it! Now its rotting away out side hasnt moved in 5 years! I been waiting to get the call he worked on it but havent yet! Thinking about stopping to see if hes money hungry make a nice winter project!

  8. Your putting to much thought into this! If your 756 is doin it now! A 966 is gonna do better! Thier good tractors as long as they been maintained like anything! If you do buy a 10 that cat 3 doesnt mean nothin! If your just baling hay! Not like your paying more for the tractor that is that old if it had a 2 or 3! A 9 will be cheaper than a 10 everybody wants a 10! That why i have two 9s and one 10! Would like to buy another 9 if in can scrap up the money!

  9. Looks good! My old boss had a stieger i thought the way the duels clamped were dumb way to go on but he didnt use much off set disc and a big old spreader that was hydraulic spreader that sat real high didnt haul as much as the knights he had so he didnt use it much when i worked for him!
