New rear wheels for W-4

Recommended Posts

It would seem I'm in the market for a set of new rear wheels for my W-4. The old ones are badly rusted and I'm told leaking calcium. I'd like to get a new set rather than search for a good used pair but I don't know if these are still a common size or what info I'd require to get a new set made up.

The service manual I have says they are a 40" x 24" wheel but I don't know if it's a certain offset or design, etc.

Any help is appreciated. I'm 700km from the home farm so can't measure them up myself.

My W4 has 14.9x26 tires and from this most any good wheel dealer should be able to help you out.

The 40" x 24" listing are for steel wheels. For pneumatic tires in the bottom paragraph it lists 11 X 26 and 12 X 26 flat base rims which fit 12.4 and 13.6 X 26 and 13.6 and 14.9 X 26 tires. these are somewhat odd (older) sizes and you may be limited to which size you can get.

I don't think you can get new rims. The best bet is cutting the centres out of combine rims. I have done many!

Depends on the year. The early W4s had 24 (Split rims) inch rears while later were 26 inch. The red W4 is a 1941 with the 24 inch rears while the faded golden coloured 1947 W4 has 26 inch rears.
