TD25 International DT-817 engine

What is the good and bad of the TD25 and specifically the DT-817 engine.
Torque converter powershift.
Anyone have first hand mechanical and operational experience on this big guy?

Friend of ours stripped coal with a 25 in the early 80"s,he loved it,the 817 sounded good,an i swear i believe it would outpush our 8-k,but he serviced it religously especially filters. He bought another 25 that engine seized on because operator had neglected air filters which mechanic said played havoc with engine,sorry i can't give you more help they wasn't many in our area,but most spoke well of the big guys. I have heard on this engine used in 4WD farm tractors, if air filters start to plug, it will start sucking air from the crank case past the pistions, and crankcase oil with the air, and before you know it, no oil left. I think this was the engine used in the
IH 4866 4wd tractor and there have been some comments in the Red Power General forum about this problem. Several engines were trashed because of dusty field conditions and neglected air filters. I think parts availability is a problem and expensive. The engine is a good engine and a power house. The dozer is a power house also. There are several 25s about 30 miles SW of me that are in use. A local farmer has one in a IH 4866 4WD, no problems. There is a person on ""Heavy Equipment Forum" that runs them. He goes under the name "TD 25C" My self, ACHD21A with an AC 855 at 300hp. It is pleasure to run a big dozer.

Bob I think that was the V800 used for awhile in the TD20's.......supposedly they worked out well in the crawlers because their governed speed was much lower.......

The 817 was a great engine, lots of power, they will pour some smoke under load, sad part is they were made long ago now and parts are getting scarce and costly to rebuild. I would just evaluate it's performance, condition and wear......no matter how good things eventually wear out........

DT 817 was used in the 4300 4wheel drive tractor, I think it was a good engine for being designed in the 50s, 4 valve, oil spray pistons , oil cooler, ect( been a better engine for the 4566/4788 tractor ). BUT parts are hard to come by AND COSTLY ,new parts mostly come from komasto,if avaible. New head gasket set 5 years ago was close to $1000.00 . We are talking 50 year old equipment(constrution parts are not treated like ag)
