IH 424 PTO problems

4 posts in this topic

I just got a gas IH424 with the 2 stage clutch about a month ago. Hooked up the bushog and she keeps jumping out of gear (PTO). If I keep my boot heal on the PTO lever then no problem but just as soon as my heal comes off she jumps out. I checked the PTO stub (where I hook the bushhog PTO shaft to the tractor) no wiggle or play there so I'm guessing it's somewhere inside the rearend housing but was hoping someone could give me some ideas to narrow down which parts might need to be replaced or adjusted

I have a b414 that does the same thing. If I'm not mistaken they are for the most part the same tractor. Our fix for the last 18+ years has been a tarp strap hooked onto the top link pin and then hooked to the handle. You can also remove the factory handle and use vise grips so you don't get the sh*t knocked out of your leg every time. If you come up with a proper fix let me know I think that ole leg beatin handle is still around the farm somewhere.

Sounds like the pto shifter fork is bent and not allowing the shifter to completely engage. Eason

I don't think that is what causes it. Atleast not on mine. There is a little rod on the pto lever that hangs in a hole on the side of the hydraulic housing. More than likely, like mine, the hole is worn and lets the rod slip out and implant itself into the back of your leg.
