Vintage Ads

5,114 posts in this topic

I've acquired a pretty sizeable stack of old Farm Journals, with some ads I've seen before and quite a few I haven't. If anybody is interested, I can dedicate a thread and throw a few of them up here every week while winter has everybody cooped up. On a related note, I just took this with a camera, albeit a pretty decent DSLR. I really hate to fold these treasures up and run through my scanner, if anybody has a better idea to preserve this stuff digitally I would love to hear it.

I love old farm magazines and advertisements, and would love to see you post more. As far as scanners, I believe HP made one (not sure if they're still making it) that was about the size of a laptop computer. If you wanted to scan something from say, a large book, you could lay the scanner on top of it. I know I'm not doing a very good job describing it, but I have used one and it was very handy. My folks had one, and think it was only about a hundred bucks maybe 6 or 7 years ago.

I've had the same problem as some of the old magazines were quite a bit bigger than my scanner. Anything much bigger than an 8x10 I will have to scan in two parts and then splice it back together using a photo editing program. In some cases I can get a reasonable result just shooting the whole ad with my digital camera. Have to get the lighting right and avoid glare though.

Heres is an example of a full two page ad from the Country Guide showing a name that doesn't exist anymore. Those are Olivers on the left that were sold here in Canada as Cockshutts. Minneapolis Moline on the right.

I'd also like to see ads from companies that are no longer in business

Like this? lol, maybe there should be a separate deal for rainbow colors. I will keep this predominantly IH.

Like you I have a stack of 30 years worth of successful farming magazines and I have tried taking pictures and coping them and they don't turn out good, IH had some great advertisements back then, its a shame everyone can't see them.

Clay----

Great topic--------hope to see you continue. I have quite an old collection of magazines that I need to go through myself-----just never get around to it.

Hope you don't mind some of the rest of us throwing in one ocassionally--------I vote that any color be allowed; all paint and iron eventually turns to rust----------------most of my old tractors are just that.;)

In regards to scanners-------------I did have a 11 x 17 Brother "all in one"; I don't know----------maybe I got a bad one----I see alot of people happy with them. It always seemed to be changing settings on me---------I finally got disgusted with it and discarded it. I noticed one in Office Max the other day at $250+/-.

If anybody knows of a better option than the Brother (within the reasonable price range)------------I would appreciate them letting me know. (I deal with alot of large farm maps)

Taking a photo with the digital cameras is an viable option---------but not as easy as the scanner option.

I scanned a bunch of these IH ads a few years ago and saved them to disk. Now I wish I had put the dates on them as it would be more interesting . When did the "new 706, 806 " series become available?

I think 1963.

I've been looking around on Amazon and found some hand held wand scanners that are reasonably priced and look like would be real handy to have around the shop and for office work anyway. Think I am going to give one of them a try for this. Like Loadstar said, if I am going to take the time to do this stuff it might as well be organized with some notes so it's not hard to dig for in the future.

I could see that Ray. This ad from 1961 shows they were still pushing the 660s. Country Guide did not always go with full colour ads but every now and then they threw one in . This one is kind of in between. Not black and white but not "living colour" either.

I was almost going to post this one over in the pull type combine thread but figured it belonged here instead. White is a name you don't hear much anymore although the old equipment is still out there working. Not too many of these pull type 8650 combines left working though.

A little International content here. Apparently the millionth Farmall was produced in 1948 (or late 47) as shown in this ad from Canadian Farm Equipment magazine , January 1948. Too bad its not in living colour but it was unusual to see more than 3 colours in ads in these magazines.

I see I am not the only one who has saved some of the old stuff. I wish I had kept a few more of the buyers guides. LIke this IH one from the early sixties showing their line of pull type combines. I actually saw one of these listed on a farm auction here this spring.

Wow, my idea is getting a little more response than I expected. Since I kinda started this and everybody seems to be digging out their stash of goodies, should we try to go ahead and split a new thread out for brand x stuff, maybe even old automotive etc., and keep one for strictly IH? There's neat old seed corn and feed company ads, tons of stuff out there that could be shared. I can't wait to see what other people may post that I haven't seen before, I just wonder if there should be a little effort at organization if this turns into dozens of pages of pictures.

And a little teaser... I know the wrapped cabs for the 86 series intro have been discussed on these boards, but don't think anybody ever put up an ad showing them.

I guess it depends just how much input happens on this thread. If everybody joins in it might get a little overloaded and need categorizing.

Interesting ad for the new 86 series you posted. Never seen anything like that except for when JD introduced their new "sound gaurd bodies". I think they showed up at the dealers enclosed in cardboard .

Just a little automotive input here as it is impossible to scan the old magazines without seeing an ad for a farm truck. Anyone else ever seen the unit bodied Mercury pickups from 1961? For that matter does anybody even remember Mercury trucks? (Hint: its a Ford)
