Indiana Speed limit

10 posts in this topic

Planning a trip to Elkhart Indiana tomorrow. I can't decide whether to plan the majority of the route thru Indiana or Illinois. If I head for Indy then go to Elkhart, the majority of the trip will be in Indiana. I will be pulling a trailer and I hate the 55 mph speed limit in Illinois. Is Indianas speed limit 65 with trailer in tow?

FN, In Indiana all roads have a 55mph speed limit unless otherwise posted. As for the I-states, I believe the signs read "Speed limit 65, trucks & vehicles with trailers -55mph", though you never see trucks, or cars for that fact, observing the speed limits. Normal flow of traffic on I-states is about 72mph. Unless you are on I-465 around Indy & then it jumps to about 85 :D:D

You can add I65 south of Indy to the over 72mph roads.

By the way boog, you didn't answer my question a few days ago about keeping your nose above all the water up around your neck of the woods. Were you affected?

Thanks Boog

Gonna be a long trip for sure. I hope we can get to heading back South by late Friday night as it looks to be some weather heading into the Elkhart area for the weekend. Last thing I want is to be driving in snow with a trailer in tow. Barry

Farmall Nut, having traveled on a lot of those roads, I would think that I57 to I80 would be the least amount of hassle and the best posted speeds. The 2 and 4 lane roads(non-I-State) in both Ill & In are 55mph. You can come up the Parkways in Ky until you hit Henderson and then go north on 41/63/41, which is 4 lane but has stop lights galore. That route will take you through Boog land, but expect a lot of stops. Going through Ill on non-I-State isn't too bad until you get about half way up the state, then traffic and stops increase considerably. And wrong turns when you miss a sign in the middle of a strange town always happens to me. Elkhart is about 7 hours out of Henderson, which is about 2 & 1/2 from you. Pulling a trailer will add another hour. It'll be a long day.

Good luck

Think I'll go to Louisville and then on to Indy. Adds about 20 miles but probably has better roads. I very much dislike 41, aka stoplight city. And what about the Loyd Expressway.....no express there!!

That 41/63/41 route is a real complain :( . You'll be coming thru Hendersonville/Evansville, right thru downtown Terra Haute, plus several small towns. Beware, north of Terra Haute on IN 63 the state boys like to enforce the spd limit (55) until you get to about US36. Also, if you miss IN63 on the north side of TH & continue on 41 you're gona add another hour to your travel time on a windy 2 lane road & small towns.

The one good thing , you will be in boogland when you get to US 136. We farm on the s.e. corner of the intersection & live about 4 miles west. let me ahead if you come that way & maybe we can workout a meeting if you have time.

I'm like F450 & would recomend I-57 thru IL to I-80 Take I-80 (becomes the Toll Road in IN) and it will take you to Elkhart. Stay off the IL 2 lane roads, they're worse than IN for small towns

Guess I missed that post 450man. Lots of field ponds & the Wabash was near record highs. other than having to go to "manual assist" for a couple days on the john, & flooded roads that are now froze over we survived. :D

Good to hear that all is well. There are a lot of folks south of you that didn't fare too well.

I went through southern IN last weekend on I-64 and it was a real nice trip and there didn't seem to be a speed limit. I was pulling a trailer and ran about 60-65 and wasn't keeping up with the flow. Saw some scenic country and got to see how far the Wabash was out of its banks. :o
