Farmall 560 Turbo

7 posts in this topic

I am looking at a 1963 farmall 560 diesel with the IH turbo setup on it. Does anyone have any comments on the IH turbo tractors? I have a 1962 model with the m&w turbo and i like it really well, i was wondering if there are many differances between the two(horsepower, sound, etc.). I've never really been around one with the ih turbo but i've always wanted one just because i thought they are pretty neat and not real common to find. I'd love to hear some stories from anyone who has used them in the field and any info would be greatly appreciated.

Correct but there was an IH turbo that you could order through parts and have dealer installed or put on yourself. If I remember right it was "supposed" to be for high altitude use.

Someone on here probably knows more about it than I do. I have never been around one I only know what I have read and been told.

Very true, however, IH did offer a turbocharger kit for a 560. It used the exhaust manifold & turbo from a TD9 282-powered crawler. It involved cutting a new hole in the hood ahead of the original. It was kinda marketed as a 'high altitude' kit for a 560 Diesel. Neighbor to the south of me has one. Never have seen it run, but he's had it for years. Its a tough-looking old horse, has a big ol straight pipe on it.

My 560 has the factory dealer installed IH turbo and i love it, all though it doesnt do any hard work anymore it still ocassionally sits on the auger or two point blade. tractor is turned up quite a bit and blows a lot of black smoke. we dynoed it last year and it was still climbin at 130 horse but i made them stop there before she puked a head gasket, i was just happy that it was more than 100! all in all a very nice set up

A guy i know by austin mn has the IH turbo on his wheatland 560. He pulls it and it really hammers! The thing would be unstoppable if it had planetaries like the 660!I watched it make a 990 oliver with a detroit look weak!

My Uncle still farms with his 560 with IH turbo. Replaced the turbo onnce. Mostly rakes hay with it now. Had to give up on the original D282 last year as a the no 1 sleeve was cracked the full length and it would leak oil out the exhaust. It also had a patched hole it the block where a rod poked through many years ago. Farmed for many years at 100hp pulling a 18' disk and with a spray tank in tow. Won a lot of tractor pulls at 120hp. The picture is from a local pull. Tractor is now running 85hp.
