IH 1486 vs JD 4440

The neighbor is all IH, he has a 1486 that I'm repairing now, the differential went out. Is it just me or is the diff way to small and light for a tractor that size? I've talked to another mechanic and he said its quite common. This is a total of $15,500 he put in it for repairs. He is thinking of trading it in on a JD 4440,because he thinks its built better and will hold up better for him. Any thoughts/opinions on his decision?

I have replaced several ring and pinions in a 1486 tractor, not normal for the differential to shell out also but it does happen. My point here though is that the last four years I worked before retiring I worked at a Deere dealership and one of the last jobs I did there was to "replace a differential in a 4440". It had broken the diff at the bearing and I understand that was a problem with them as the new one was revised. It just so happened to be the biggest repair bill I ever did in my 41 years (37 on red) of repairing tractors. Just thought I would throw that in for discussion. Deere does have a nice power train on those models so not knocking them. I was less than impressed with the newer 7000 series however. I think I have that number correct.

The first year the 4440's came out they had some problems didn't they? but after the first year I thought they pretty much fixed the bugs. I know after the first year they increased the axle size.

You ever see many problems with the powershifts in the 4440?

the powershift is pretty tough on a jd. you will break the damper clutch sometimes and most of the time if plates go bad it is in the front clutch packs. the transmission will go to 10000 hrs before to much trouble if you keep oil in it. a quad range transmission will need repair to at about 10000 hrs synchronizers and shift collars. the transmission isn't hard to work on once you have been around jds. jd to ih repairs to the ring gear are about equal.

I think I'd go a bit newer than a 4440 if I traded. I might be different, but I like the 7000 JD's. A pain to work on, but they are a nice machine IMO. With that said, ones I have been around haven't needed a whole lot either.

Here we go again. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Most John Deere's were driven by owner-operators. Down here Most of the "other" tractors were driven by steering wheel holders. Also it was VERY easy to turn up a 400 series engine and get reliable horsepower and torque rise. John Deere didn't know the meaning of torque rise. Also look at most IH rear ends and see how many weights were required to hold the rear end to the ground. Eason

we put 2 rear ends in 1486, seems like the shifting is the culprit, liked everything on it exceot when the shifting would get loose, sems like you have a little more leeway with the 56 or 66 series, i just think way too much power going thru that 706 rear end, i always thought if we would buy another 86, i would try a 986, jsut seems like that rear end would last forever, in a midsize tractor, sold 1486 bought a magnum back, not much difference in pto power 7120 but sure does shift nicer

A 4440 is better suited to replace a 986 ,To pull like a 1486 you would need a 4640.

The green ones break too ,both of ours are down right now .

Oh yes the green ones break also, what green ones do you have and whats wrong with them?

I seen a 4440 that pulls pretty good, I guess with the injector pump turned up to 180hp helps though

Buddy of mine traded a 1066 on a 4440 years ago. Supposed to both be 130hp. Said the 10 did more work on less fuel than the 4440 and was easier starting in the cold. He has farms miles apart though and used the 4440 for the road. Liked the transmission for hauling wagons on the road. Still several of each in this area.

I've basically been an IH man all my life. However, IMO, the 66 / 86 series tractors had to be the worst tractors IH ever made. I bought a new '75 1066, a new '76 1066, a used '78 1086 & a low houred '81 1486 in '83 or '84. Not one of those tractors ever had the engine turned up but all had major transmission / rear end problems. The '75 66 was traded for the '76 after one year but had less than 50 hrs on it because of being in the shop most of the year with tranny problems. Because of those for=ur tractors I almost had to give up farming. If it wasn't for a goo friend giving me a lot of custom work I probably would have had to sell out so you won't hear anything good coming from me concerning a 66 /86 series tractor other than they had good engines.. After going to a 7120 in '87 my repair bills dropped so much it wasn't funny.

My BIL ran 4430s / 40s at the time I was running the 66s / 86s. I know he had some isses with the 30s but the 40s were pretty much trouble free as I recall. However, johndeeregreen, I think if your friend trades his 1486 for a 4440 he's going to be very disappointed when it comes to hp & what it will pull in comparison to his 14. BIL & I ran together a few tims & I used his tractors several times when one of mine was in the shop. No way would his 4440s come close to my 1086 plowing pulling the same size plows o pulling same size field cultivators let alone the 1486. If he wants something that will do what his 14 will do then he needs to look at a 4640. We traded off a 4640 a year ago & it would pull rings around a 1486..

However, the 46s can be a money pit as well. When we bought ours it had less than 200 hrs on an $8,000 engine overhaul & when we traded it off we had just gotten it back from having almost that much put into the rearend. not to mention a $4,000 hyd repair bill the year before.:(

Maybe I'm biased but I'd be looking for a 71/7220. Will cost more out of the pocket but in the long run will cost less to own.

Like Boog said a 7120 won't cost much more than a nice 4440 or even a 5288 will pretty much solve the rear end issues.

IN the early 80's I had one of each, a 1486 and a JD4440. There were things I liked and disliked about both of them.

I had the JD turned up to about 160 horse, and I could not tell much difference between it and the 1486.

The 14 had good power too.

They would run round for round with each other at pretty much matching speeds, pulling 5-16" plows, in some pretty tough conditions.

The ground in our area would give a tractor a good work out sometimes.

I put a TA in my 14 once.

I kept it light, and on a 5 bottom plow, when some in this area were on 6 bottoms, loaded with weights to get the job done.

There used to be a bunch of farmalls in this area.

I hear it all the time, that farmers liked the tractors, just didn't like putting rear ends and TA's in them all the time.

Most people switched over to JD's and there are not many IH's in our area. Not many dealers left.

The one I bought my 14 from, closed about a year after I got the tractor.

I did like that 1486 though. Mine was about a 1980 model. Traded a nice 1066 for it.

Would not mind having a real nice one now.

P.S. Never had my 4440 in the shop in the time I owned it. I still have a 4450. Pretty good tractors.

I have , however, put a lot of money in some JD tractors. I put $16,000 in a 4640 rear end and hydraulics, once.

Bought it used, and didn't know the history of it very well.

That was a bit painful at the time.

You can have problems with all of them.
