Why does a 4430 use more fuel then the comparible IH?

A neighbor and I were talking the other day about this. He purchased a '77 4430 this year to cut and bale with. He mows with a 9' kuhn discmower, and bales with a 457 deere baler, so its not under a load at all.

But he was telling me mowing and baleing that he burns 70-80 gallons of fuel every 3 days. In those 3 days he may cover 35 acres(cuts and bales at 5.5 mph) and avereaging 2.5-3 bales per acre, not alot. My 14 is set to 175hp, and doesnt burn near that. I cut with a 1431 NH discbine which is 12 foot cut. I cut 80 acres on 50 gallons of fuel, running between 10 and 12 mph. To me if anyone was going to burn more fuel it would be me since I have a bigger load and more hp. As to the tractor specs, heres his then mine.

~4430 is set at 143 hp, 8 spd powershift, cab and air, with 18.4-38's, no weights. He runs his pto equipment around 15-1600 rpm(I know I know :blink: ) Motor overhauled, head work down, new injectors and pump. It was dynoed the day he bought it. I went with him to pick it up. weighs 12,500

~1466 is set to 175 hp, t/a equiped, open station, 20.8-38's, run my equipment at rated pto speed (in this case 1000rpm for the mower) New motor, injector pump, injectors, weighted and has loader. i had mine dyno'd a few months back. Weighs 14,900

as far as the ground goes, the 80 that I cut was much thicker in hay. I was cutting hay beans that average 4-5 bpa, he was on first cutting fescue.

Whats the deal? why does his burn so much more fuel? His has the 404 but has an in-line pump. Is that the difference between fuel usage? My uncle runs a 4440, and a 4430 and he complains about fuel usage too. I was just curious, I had alot of time to ponder this today while at work.

I always blamed the JD cylinder head...... Air has to enter, light off and come back out the same way, rather than in one side, out the other of the cross flow design of IH.... That and the hard pulling hydraulic pump. Another thing...How much fuel did they use when you started them up? Better have the cab door closed!! LOL!

Lol I told him to just let it idle all night, itd burn less fuel :D I bet his burns 5 gallons on start up! His looks like a profield tractor on start up...

Well, he has a 9' mower where your's is 12', so he's taking 3' less on each round compared to you. Another thing is that he's going a heck of a lot slower in the field than you are too. I bet you can have that 80 acres mowed in about the same amount of time it takes that guy with the 4430 to mow his 35-40 acres.

I understand what your saying, but mine would pull harder, right? I maybe way off. But even so is there that much difference that his burns that much more then mine? In a weeks time he burns 140 gallons, where as Im just burning half that, and covering more ground. To me it would sound like I have everything going against me except for the width and ground speed. i have more weight, more hp, and more load. When I mowed that 80, the tractor had a pretty good trail of smoke out the stack. Ill look and see if I have any pics of it.

I would say the best way to get an even comparison is swap tractors for the next cutting.

I know why would you want to run a Deere, but maybe you could use his mower and baler for his next round of cutting that would give you a more accurate comparison. And/or have him do your next cut with your equipment.

Years ago I worked for a land clearing company that had a Case 930 Crop King and a leased JD 4230.

We were both pulling construction discs of equal size and weight.

To be fair, the JD would go about half again as fast through the field as the Case.

At the end of each day we would put about the same amount of fuel in each tractor. The difference was we would put about the same amount again into the JD at lunch.

So for twice the amount of fuel it would do half again as much work.

I am thinking the JD was a little thirsty compared to the Case.

When I started to work with the state at a research farm we had a 4430 sycrorange with creeper for picking peanuts. I always said it was a thirsty gutless wonder. We would have to bring it up at lunch to fuel it up. It would not run 8 hours on a tank of fuel. After dad died a friend bought our 856. He sold the 856 and bought a 4430. He likes the cab and ride of the 4430 but says the 856 will out pull it and work just as much with a lot less fuel. Eason

Do not want get into color war but a neighbor said i think my 4430 uses 5gph just idling. Also was told and I can remember the numbers of a 4430 and a White that took turns running a drainage pump same load same time and the JD used alot more fuel.

I have a 4430, and a 1086...both about the same horsepower.

The 44 uses about 20% more fuel on any job. I blame the inline pump, because the old 4320 has the same power as the 4430 but used much less fuel.

:) Just took a look at my Nebraska test data, courtesy of Old Oak Farmalls. :blink: 1970 Farmall/International 1456 did 15.81 HP hours per gallon. 1969 JD 4520 Power-Shift did 15.08 HP hours per gallon. data only went up to 1970, so no 4430 was tested. The 4520 is probably similar to the 4430. :unsure: Sure not a LARGE difference! :rolleyes: Must be the way the 4430 is maintained and operated! :lol::huh: The most fuel efficient tractor? 1956 JD 720 Dsl! :o:blink: It did 17.97 HP hours per gallon! :rolleyes::unsure::wacko:

some of my neighbours had 4630

nice tractors, 1 of them, used to keep the hrs worked and fuel used, so we where comparing the 4630 pulling 2 x 24row combines & the 1466 pulling a 3tn aircart & 29tyne chisel plough, chisel plough on knife points was a lot heavier to pull & cut a few feet wider

i used to get 22hrs out of both tanks which around 80gallons, 4630 used to get around 10hrs out of 60gallons, neighbour commented if u wanted a fuel efficent tractor , then make certain it was nt painted green

4030's, 4230's 4430's, 4040, 4240, etc, all used a lot of fuel. It's not your imagination. One of our landlords used to have a 4030 while we had a 1086. The 4030, pulling narrow implements, would burn much more fuel in the same amount of time. Heck, the ole 966 would run circles around it and use at least 1/3 less fuel and they are both naturally aspirated for a better comparison. That's why I say that those JD's are the gift that keeps on giving. More expensive to buy, more expensive to run, more expensive to maintain.

Hi everbody. MY brother and i bought a 4630 three years ago 75 model with quad range . on the baler it will use twice as much fuel as 1066 that we ran on baler before. we could average about 200 to 260 bales with the 1066 and 8480 baler and use a tank of fuel. i think the 1066 holds 38 gals. the 4630 will do about 200 bales on 56 gals with the same baler. But guess wich one is nicer to run. Don't get mad i've baled for 20 years with either a 966 or the 1066 and lost most of my hearing because of that. We have a 1566 we use to put anhydrous on with a 29 ft chisel with knives an 80 acre field 5 miles away one tank of fuel . you will run out a mile from home. we bought the 4630 and used it on the same field two years ago drove it home put 42 gals of fuel in so under full load hp to hp they are the same. My dad has a 4020 powershift if we run it on the double nine mower 15 gals a day. we have a 560 farmall diesel run that on the mower the last couple years it does 43 hrs on a tank. I think it holds 30 0r31 gals so it will burn 9 gals a day under part load. the 4020 has the edge on being nice to run though. don't get mad i like my ihs we still have almsost everyone we have ever bought. thanks dale

The Deere cylinder head isn't a cross-flow head, and the Bosch A pumps are the two reasons I'd say they're thirsty. Add that the 30 series Deeres were all warmed-over 404's, and there you have it!

Ill agree that common sence in real life green will drink all day long. A buddy of mine and I were tractor shopping at the same time. He got a 2-105 and I got a 5088. Anyway he found and forwarded me some Nebrasak data and it showed a 1486 I think vs. 4440. As stated above who do you think won.............................................................................

i never put much faith in the Neb test fuel results, those aren't your production line tractors no matter whose name is on them, the company engineers have tuned and tested them to get the best performance out of them. kinda like the fuel mpg stickers on new cars , how often is that right ? to many variables in everyday use

Wouldn't fuel usage be due to ; timing, head design ,injector design ,piston design? The injection pump only feeds the fuel to the engine thru the injectors and I would think except for low pressure the pump shouldn't be the reason for excessive fuel usage in a whole line of tractors.

I don't claim to know much and I'm not exactly sure which pump is on them but I was always told that the deere used more fuel because of the ways they set there governor's in the pumps up for there torque rise and power curve. My dad mechanic'd for JD for quite a while and that's where he thought the issue was. Even the new deeres use more fuel. The reason I always agreed with the opinion that the governor in the pump was partly to blame was also because on the 30 series clear up to the 8400 series(000 series), if you stick a big square baler on them they will blow a huge cloud of black smoke everytime the plunger hits. Granted under load, a slightly underpowered tractor of any brand will grunt under that plunger load. But I'm talking about drastic loping of the engine and sometimes they can do it even with the baler off. Because when the plunger is coming up on the return stroke, it takes less power to turn the main gearbox and plunger crank and the flywheel on the baler does a lot of the work so the jd pump being set up the way it is pulls back on the fuel (to increase efficiency I guess?) and then once it has to crank over to the packing stroke the baler needs more hp but the pump is a bit slow to respond so once it does it loads too much fuel. John Deere even has a service bulletin out about setting up a deere to run a big baler. Thats just my basic understanding of what I read from the jd service bulletin and I'm probably way over my head. I don't know the link but I even found it in one of the news archives on there website. Somehow they thought they were setting the tractor up for efficiency and to only fuel when it needed but it seems like they run a bit lower on fuel and then take to long to get more when they need it so they slug too much and blow smoke. And like I said I'm no expert but I know in any engine whether it is a gas or diesel in tractor or over the road in a car or truck, if you keep rpm and fuel flow as consistant as possible, with as few fluctuations as possible, you will achieve better fuel economy.

So being that Ih had the cross flow design that was mentioned above would help maintain a consistant load on the motor vs. variables in the pressure in the jd overhead would also have an affect on the demand for fuel from the pump right?

Then you just have the basics. Most deeres I know of always used smaller blocks then the competition in the same hp class. Thus achieving the same power ratings would come at some sacrifice to fuel economy due to higher fuel settings and running a different turbo.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s we used to help a neighbor and he would help us in planting season. His JD equipment would burn more fuel than our red when doing the same job with similar tractors/equipment. It was nicer to ride in his cab than to ride on our open station though!

I don't know if the current tractors are like this or not. They have changed about everything since then.

I agree on not putting much faith in the Nebraska tests. Look at the famous 4020 test. They added a ton of weight to the 4020. I believe it was about 5000 lbs. Then the 4020 outpulled the 856 in the Nebraska test. Everybody knows a 4020 would not pull with a 806 or 856. Eason

The Deere hydraulic system probably doesn't help anything either, their closed center system is going to suck more hp than a gear pump or a PFC system. Deere tractors have always tested good on fuel economy at Nebraska Tractor Tests but in real lift nobody seems to agree with them. I know back in '99 we rented an 8400 to put on NH3 with pulling a 15 knife toolbar and it would use 17 gph, the next year we bought our 6788 and pulling a 13 knife toolbar at the same speed it used right at half that amount. Our Cat is the same hp and year as that 8400 and only uses about 12 gpa when pulling it hard.

In 1982 dad bought a 4430 to back up the 1066 open station. The cab was nice, but it used half again as much fuel and the seat was crap and it didn't have near the traction. Oh and it wouldn't start if it was 80 out without a snort of either.
