International 1456

806 and 856 turbo set up.

8 posts in this topic

I need a turbo setup for a 856. I found a m&w set-up, but the turbo is shot and it's very expensive to get it rebuilt. Does anyone have a good m&w turbo or a nice one to get rebuilt? The one that I found is siezed up and the compressor wheel has all of the fins broken off. If anyone can help me, just email me with what you have and the price. Thanks.

Our M&W went bad on our 806 2 or 3 years ago and we replaced it with an Air Resarch T04 9096 B.We got it from George at Georges Diesel Service in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. I dont recall it being that expensive at the time either. I dont know where you are from but Pleasant Hill is an eastern suburb of Des Moines. If you would like I can look up his number when I get a chance.

If you are willing to part with some cash, I'm sure this NOS kit will be back on ebay before long, or you could send the seller a message and maybe he'll sell it to you straight out.

I talked to the diesel shop today from Spencer, IA, and they told my that I have to go to a bigger air cleaner with a air research TO4 because the turbo will create a big enough vaccuum to suck oil through it. They told me that the M&W turbo has a different kind of seal in it so that it will not suck oil through it on a small air cleaner set up. They told me in order to go with the air research turbo that I would have to put a air cleaner from a 1206, 1256, or 1456 on it or replace the air filter every 100 hours. I asked another diesel shop from Dubuque about this and they told me that the small air filter would be no problem with the air research turbo. I don't know who is right. What's your experience with this?

Just Checked over at HY-CAP and they list a reman TO4 9096 for $756 and they also have a New TO4B90 for $587 ??? whats the difference in the two? I looked under AC7040 because it uses the same turbo as you and I both need.

Thats the biggest bunch of BS that i've heard for a while. A t04 will work fine.

Thats the biggest bunch of BS that i've heard for a while.  A t04 will work fine.

The diesel shop at Spencer, Iowa said that the stock air filter system will work with a air research TO4, but the element will probably have to be changed around every 100 hours to prevent the turbo from sucking oil through it when it becomes dirty. They said the air filter system would work alot better off of a 1206, 1256, or 1456 because of the higher filtering area, and that the air filters would not need to be serviced quite as often. This 856 will be strictly used for farming where there is alot of dust and dirt. I just wanted to clarify all of this information so that everyone completely understands what I'm trying to say. Does a 806 and a 856 diesel have the same air filtering area or does the 856 have more. If I go with a air research TO4, I don't want any problems with the turbo sucking a bunch of oil through it and ruining the engine. The diesel shop said that the M&W turbo was designed to be used with small air filter systems and that they had special shaft seals that would seal good on higher vaccuum situations. In other words, they are telling me that a M&W turbo doesn't suck oil as easily as a air research. I would appreciate anyone opinions on this and go into detail on your theories.

We used the same air filter that was on it when new. The air filter on any turbo charged engine needs to be bigger than a NA engine just becasuse of the increased air flow. But if you keep the original clean you will be fine. It even tells you that on the original M&W sticker that the change intervals need shortened. If I was you I would call George and talk to him. He is an old IH man from way back. I dont think the one we got from Geroge was as high as the one that Rumpy mentioned. This T04 model is from something that A/C used however. I do remember that. But call Geroge. He can set you straight. His number is 515-262-9140.
