................ I'm not tight am I?

...............  I mean what's wrong with cutting corners to save $100 on $40K house I mean there's nothing wrong with that is there?

.............. I mean what's wrong with saving for retirement or something like that.

ORF

If YOU think YOU are, then YES. Otherwise, it IS your life, not mine.

About the house... I think there is something wrong with cutting corners on something your going to be spending long cold winters alone in. Cheap materials = poor construction = diminished lifespan of the structure. My thinking, build it once and do it right. Might costa bit more now, but will last longer. Thus actually SAVING money in the long run.

By all means, save for retirement. At the same time, don't forget to enjoy life. I know I'm one of the younger guys on here, but I'm 30 already. How the **** did that happen?! :o

One more thing about the house.... For the money you are talking you can get a NEW singlewide. (used to be called trailer houses but I guess that must have a bad connotation now) A year ago in March we pulled in this NEW 16x80. 2 baths, 3 bedrooms, new appliances (water heater, furnace, stove, fridge, dishwasher, central a/c) bay window in one bedroom, (currently serving as my 'puter room) and a fireplace.

The price tag? $42,000. Go price a "stripped down" 14x70 once, I think you'll be surprised at the price. I don't doubt you can live in a 14x26. My brother built a 20x24 cabin that I could easily live in if I was single. But you better plan on building a varmint proof storage shed. Trust me when i say it won't take long to fill your new house with "stuff"! I already built a 12x16 "pumphouse" that also happens to store all my toy tractors. Should have gone bigger.. <_<

Interesting thread. And I thought I was cheap.

ORF, ChadK makes a good point. A used mobile home (or camper) can be had pretty cheap. Perhaps even half of what you are planning to spend. If you are really as cheap as you say you are, this would be difficult to pass up.

Cheap is one thing, looking for good value is another. There is truth in the saying "Penny wise, and pound foolish." Being young, if you buy the good stuff the first time around, it will last you a lifetime. The cheap stuff you will have to replace every few years. Which is the better value? Which ends up being the cheaper solution over time?

Your choice to save while your young is smart though. It will give you a lot of freedom in later years. I started saving in high school, married a woman that would rather save than spend, and it has allowed me to retire at age 46 debt free. And I don't feel I have had to live in poverty to get there.

My advice for cost effective living? Get out of debt as soon as you can. When you are in debt, the money you make isn't yours, it belongs to someone else.

Just some thoughts that came to mind reading this thread...

No, your not too cheap. Friggin crazy/nuts, yes, but not too cheap.

I am guessing that the contents of those boxes are playboy in one and penthouse in the other?

Even if you don't want to get married, the thought of you coming in from the barn and just crashing on your bed makes me think you don't want much of a social life at all. That is a pity.

I've lived in a dorm room about the size your talking. I am sure glad I am out of there!!!

Mike,

He's probably too cheap to buy porn too, so they will be the month old editions out of the dumpster with the pages stuck together :ph34r::ph34r::mellow::o:unsure::wacko:

After hearing the plan of 'coming in from the barn and crashing on the bed' The only thing I can say is good luck, and thanks for not screwing up some nice young womans life. Be celibate. PLEASE.

WEK,

I'm gonna have to agree with you (Again! damn thats more than twice in one month!) he will die some day and find he's never lived at all. You are 100% correct in that respect.

ORF, Was thinking about this home of yours. No wife or kids. Just the dog... maybe. Short walk to the house etc. -- Why don't you build a lean to on the barn and throw a bed in there and a stove and a desk and claim it as office for the farm and then put a heat exchanger in there and use the heat from the barn for living space heat. This way you can step out of your office at night and give the bossies a good night kiss and tuck them in and then crawl back into bed. I had a few times that I wished there had been a bed that close to the barn like the nights when the cows started having calves or when nights ran into mornings and needed to crash for a few 'minutes'.

ORF, you are young yet, and I can tell you life sucks after awhile when you are truley alone. And what makes you think your life will turn out like your folks's lives did? You make life what you want out of it. I know that women and marriage is taking a chance in life but if you don't take a chance you will remain statis que. In the bible it says that Christ left his people with one commandment that was more important than all the others, and that is to love, An unselfish love. Ever wonder what God would want you to do in this world? - Would God like a dried up, cynical, nonloving person in heaven? - "It is greater to give than to receive".

Like others have said here that you only get one go around here in life, so make the best of it. And don't be selfish with your life. Let your light shine!.

Cheap? Think you have a corner on the market at this point. Save your money until you can afford to build better and have vision of future possibilities. I have a B-I-L that had tunnel vision in his youth and did some stupid things he thought were smart at the time. Now he looks back and wonders what it would have been like if he had done things differently. Things like selling one of the best herds in the community, tearing down a house that was in better shape and warmer than the one he lived in, selling the farm because he wanted to do some other things when he could have kept the farm and done the other things anyway. Please put a positive spin on life and open your heart and mind up and let the good come in.

I am not all for going cheap and cutting corners, i would rather do it right the first time even if that means 1 more month for the money. It will come back to bite you in the butt later down the road!! :o

And I thought I had some learning to do,

I've had the same thoughts that run thruogh ORF's head but I guess I'm luckey to have a family who cares, there rooting for me. Though Mom, my sisters and I all see things differently we somehow manage to get along, Dad has learned that each one of is different so we are treated differently.

I know I have to work had to acheive my dreams, cause Nothen worth haven comes easy, And I'm OK with that, but my friends, well my sopposed freinds, they are all looken for the easy way out, and it seems alot of people are looken for the easy way out.

That really bothers me cause they all lack one thing that is COMMITMENT, they seem to leave many things un done or walk away when the job is almost done and leave it for the other guy to finish. For me there is no other guy so I have to finish the job or it never will get done, or done right the way it was intended.

I have a problem with these kind of people and once I see that is the way they are I walk away, and try not to waste my time, cause all it does is frusterate me in the end. I give everyone a chance in the beginning and several chances for them to make ammenads and if its my fault well I try to admit it is my fault, but once I've had the final straw I just let them drift away, and I feel better once its over.

Til I stumble across that right person that can understand me, I know I have my family to go to my mentors, and the Cows, Calves, the rest of my critters, and thoes Red Tractors are there for me when I get up, and I try to remember these are all gifts from God.

I know I'm not alone,

It just can seem that way

Here a house costs between $80-$120 a square foot. The add another $1,000-$1,500 an acre for land to put it on. My dream house is 14X26. It's about $4K under the $40K mark when you figure the middle of the scale. Here's my dream house:

Link 1

here you could not even buy a trailer pad for 1-1500.00 your looking at 5 grand to 30,000 grand an acre to build on .

BTW, FP, didn't you know that it is a mortal sin to use Rolls-Royce's slogan as your signature? [/color]

One of the guys who drops off tractors at the salvage yard is always saying that about the tractors he brings in, now i know where he got it from :D

PS if that is a mortal sin then the world must have inproved overnight :D:blink:

Trust me fellas, you'll get bored of being alone, and it'll start to play with your head. But, you still have to wait for the right woman to come along - and she will sooner or later. I spent 5 years out here 200 miles from home in what seems like solitary - working about 60-80 hours a week, and then sometimes working in KC. Most weekends, I had absolutely nothing going on, but when I was least expecting it, the right woman fell into my lap. Whether or not I can make it work out with the same job (which is very hard for the fiancee to understand), the jury's out on that. But, I looked a long time and wasted a lot of time worrying about what woman I'd end up with, and then when I wasn't paying attention, I got just what I had been looking for.

The generations before me have had kids and have made it their priority to try to make the world a better place for their kids, and I can't think of a better way to live for.

ORF - your problem right now is that you're living your life appealing to your fear, and not to your confidence (paraphrased from the late and great Ronald Reagan).

Holy $hit ORF I put an addition on my house that was bigger than that place and your right RodRod he must be planning on being celibate.

ORF has some serious issues going on here. Looks like I am not the only one who thinks so. Next topic should be titled, instead of "Am I cheap" should be "Am I wierd".

This is one of those threads that should have died with no replies but will get pages and pages of responses. :(

As we all used to say up here, " can't take it all with you when you die, might as well spend it while you can"

Spend it if you got it, on things you love to do...

might as well have fun while you still can... B)

Yeah Boog, he's already figured out that she's got 5 sisters too!

ORF, you want to live in a 14x26? Any house plans that figure the front porch in as square footage is getting pretty small. ****, you could go buy you a van and hang one of them awnings on the side for a few thousand bucks and wouldn't even need any land to park it on. You could even get so cheap as to park it in the Wal-Mart parking lot,,,then you wouldn't even need a refridgerator!! You could just use theirs.

Jesus thats cheap!

I'd love to have a cabin like that. Deep in the woods and I'd spend a week or 2 a year in it. Not every night.

How about "will I do anything for negative attention?"

I think it shouldn't be hard to tell he wasn't interested in any answers, he was just looking for a discussion to be the center of.

I was considering I slightly different plan. The plan was to build a loafing/calving barn then build a house where the hay loft would normaly be. Insulate it and put a stairs up to it. It'd work pretty good. I still might consider that plan. You'd have a hay loft but you'd have a corner of it insulated. The calving/loafing barn I'm going to build (regardless of what I do for a house) would be 30FtX60FT with a 10FTX60FT lean to. So if the hayloft is 30X60 That would leave plenty of room in the back corner for a 14X26 insulated section(house). I'm also quessing the property taxes would be cheaper if you could pass the house off as a "farm office" rather then a house. Or better yet don't tell anyone and you'll only get taxed for a cow barn.(Pretty clever If you ask me. ) Cheaper taxes means more money in my pocket for entertainment. Also the ability to check on the cows by simply looking out the window has appeal. As does the fact that should anything happen your right there. I might add a shop(garage) on later.

I guess if you had a sheep pen in the barn section, there would be no need for other companionship.
