How far would you drive a tractor home

drove our 1486 home from preston back in mid 90.s 180 miles day before new years. only wish it could of been more during the day. also bought a 1466 about 100 miles away wasn't expecting to buy it but ended up with it called home said I was heading out by the time somebody came and picked up vehicle I was only an hour from farm nice ride springtime and sunny out.

Ha-Ha.....  I agree with driving the Magnum home,  but Cold must be different here in Wisconsin.  I put my big heavy coat on to take the wife's puppy outside to do it's "business".  No going outside in single digit or below zero temps without proper clothes.

I drove our 4366 home when we bought it, about 75 miles, took about 6 hours. Also drove a 1680 home from Fox Valley which is about halfway from where it came from. A company guy took it the first part of the way. Don't know why driving them 8 hours on the road seems so much more tedious than running it 8 hours in the field!

My wife and I drove our 766 home about 80 miles. We each did a 2-3 hour stint. Wasn't bad at all.

Then last year I tried driving a 544 utility home about 150 miles. Made it over half way and the front tire delaminated. Now that was just my fault, because the tires looked the crap and I decided to go anyway. 

My wife teases me because the only tractor we traveled home from the get go, was 5 miles away. But that one needs some engine work.

around here that's the best time. in daylight no one pays any attention to your flashers but at night they are pretty much forced to

Wait  a sec- There has been absolutely no mention here of what model of Magnum this is? 

If it is a first generation "bullet proof / boxcar" Magnum , drive it home.

However if it is one those less dependable electronic / overly computerized second gen Magnums, don't trust it, you best have it hauled home. 

Lol.... I'm joking..... I think? Hmmmmm.....

I am not trying to tell a bigger fish story here—but this is a true story. We don’t have a lot of big CaseIh tractors around us because there are no dealers close by. So when I came by a local truck stop and saw four 305 CaseIh tractors all pulling two huge silage wagons each naturally I had to check this out. They had stopped for a break. Turns out they contract silage cut for someone around Sylvester,Ga and they were headed back home to Seymour, Indiana—700 miles one way. They drive this trip every year. They started out years ago hauling them and it would take two weeks each way to get everything moved. Now they just drive them in 4 days. So drive it home sounds like a fun little parade compared to some.

Unless there's something that looks like it'll cause trouble, drive it! 50 miles is a short drive. With that being said, the last tractor we bought I hauled home, 50 miles away lol. Furthest I drove was a versatile 4wd pulling a air drill. Probably was about 200 miles or a bit more. THAT was a long drive at 16mph lol.

Tail End Charlie, a 9G Chamberlain, was used as a support vehicle in the the 60’s Australian Redex Bash. It was an endurance race around Australia. Tail End Charlie did 11000 miles. Often towing up to three cars. 9G’s had a top speed of about 30 miles an hour standard, but Tail End Charlie has a taller diff ratio again. 

A lot of dealers drove Chamberlains from the nearest port to their dealerships. I know for a fact our local dealer drove them from either Sydney or Newcastle, usually towing an implement. That’s around a 250 mile trip.

Drove our 1460 combine from south of Pella to North of Grinnell. Drove a 1466 from Cedar Rapids home as well.

Like listening to all these stories,drove and drug my fare share of tractors ,farm equ. and junk home.But the longest, most grueling,slow, hateful never ending trips home were having to drive the old slow M home for lunch because my older brother didn't want to.

Hills and 4th gear,boy it took forever.

Worked  for IHC dealer in joliet,ill in the 70's  drove 1400's combines from the quad cities to the dealership many times  .Took all day,left the plant at daybreak in order to get home before dark. Combines back then were very slow.About 150 milies

I'm not scared of roading big or wide equipment when I need to and can usually stick to dirt roads most of the time but my worst was only 30 miles. I bought a case 8820 swather and found out the hard way they only have 1 speed. Maxed out at 10 mph got old fast. I gave it an upgraded drive sprocket to get a little more road speed out of it for next time

Before you start, take the time to look at a map and find the "best" route.  Not necessarily the backroads.  For instance, if you have a nice broad state HWY with wide shoulders, that is not too heavily traveled, that may be better than small roads with lots of stops.  I agree with flashers, buy yourself a magnetic strobe and install it.  People just wont't slow down anymore.  I will warn you about one thing...if there is a major river in the way, you may need to contact the State police for an escort over the bridge.  At least, that's the procedure here where I live near the Illinois river.

I once drove a 7720 200 miles, still one of my favorite memories.  At 16 mph, you had time to check out the farms, watch the roadkill disappear under the feeder....  Only problem we had was the hydro charge pump belt broke--right at a stop light in the middle of a town.  There was a Autoparts store right on the corner... new belt and go!

I know of farmers who farm from S. Indiana to eastern Iowa.  Their moves are more than 50 miles!

My grandfather & brother were early purchasers of the new JD 55 combine.  To save the delivery fee,  they went up to Moline and drove them home 170 miles!  At what 5 - 6mph??   No cab...that had to be a LOOONG trip....

If the days were longer, I probably would've driven my 1586 the 162 miles home. It was three hours to where the tractor was (and they didn't open until 8), who knows how long to install new batteries and hope that there were no major electrical problems, 10 hours back... When there was only 9 hours of daylight on a (rare) clear and sunny day, on a tractor that probably doesn't have any working lights...
