TD14 Bendix spring, possible solution

After many years of searching and unable to find a reliable source for the Bendix spring for my TD14 I may have found a solution. A few years back I bought the last spring that Hector Gemme had, and it was the only one I was able to find in North America, after many phone calls and emails. I have destroyed my spring many times so I didn't put the new one in for fear of ruining the last of them, I had been starting it with my spare starter, which had the starter drive welded solid at some point in the past 70 or so years. Well it seems the lack of a spring and the 24 volts I was supplying to the starter proved to much for the drive and a few weeks ago it broke a tooth and snapped the shaft.

So this lead me to again try to find a spring, so that I could get my starter back together and still have a spare should I detonate this one. I have another drive (minus the spring) coming from Hector, so all I needed to find was a spring and I will have 2 complete starters. So I started digging through every fourm post and website i could find that mentions anything to do with the Delco 710, TD14 starter, or any of the part numbers associated to them. I took down every number I came up with and went to see a local starter shop. After about 45 minutes of searching and phone calls he was able to locate me a spring that matched up to one of the numbers that I had found listed as a replacement starter drive for the 710.

The new spring is shorter, and is a lighter material, But it does fit so time will tell if it will stand up to the TD14. It was listed as a 12 dollar part on the US sites, but cost me $40 here in Canada.

The part number is SDR5300 I am not sure if this will help anyone else out, as it may not be sufficient for the job, but I figure it is worth a try and may just bail someone out in a pinch since these springs seems to be so hard to find.

Yes starting on gas, although I had been starting it on diesel with the welded drive, and it wasn't until I started it on gas a few times that the welded drive snapped, so may have been a coincidence but It seems like there is something in the gas side that is turning the ears off the springs. Another issue i have had is the bolts backing out and jamming on the housing. Which would also break the spring. I got about 25 tries out of the new spring before it straightened out the loop. I heated it with the torch and bent it back and so far have started it about 30 more times. so it seems like this spring would work fine one a good starting engine. I have timed mine about 5 times now, so next step will be a new cap and rotor in case the spark is jumping around inside and somehow firing on the compression stroke.

Same here, could not see the photos. And I was interested as I have 3 or 4 old starters that will be going in the scrap and if the springs are that rare and I have one, I sure would hate to find out later that I threw it away.

There's a sure way to avoid that kind of regret. Never, ever throw anything away.

i have a td14a. several yrs ago, my starter spring would uncurl at one or both ends.

i used to get a spring  for a shop for $50.  shop gone now.

for some reason, spring been ok for 4-5 yrs, staring on gas.

good luck with your welded spring.
