The TA worked good but made a bad grinding sound. Sounded like a bad bearing

It grinds in both ranges and in neutral. It has never stopped moving. It makes the most noise at idle under a load. Can't hear it very well at high rpms's.

Sound like you better get it split and find the trouble before there is more damage.

Already have it split, I want to drop the center housing off to someone who knows what they are doing.

Get TA manual, not that difficult.

Devons and others offer a rebuilt unit.

You really need to find the problem as it could be in the transmission too.

I could rebuild it for you, but it would have to be after deer hunting season

I started working on pulling the TA out. Does anyone know where I can get a wrench for the nut holding the clutch carrier?  I was also wondering if the input shaft can be taken out of the front? That would allow me to remove the pressure plate and throw out bearing giving me a lot more room.

TA input shaft, pressure plate, and clutch can all be removed from the front and top, once the tractor is split at the bell housing.

I've helped Dad do two TA clutch jobs, on a W400 and a 656. The W400 was easy. The 656 was a little more difficult because the IPTO driven gear is larger, and blocks the TA clutch from coming out. You have to pull the IPTO jackshaft, drop the IPTO gear out of the way to make room to remove the clutch... If you've got the center section out of the tractor you've got that part all done though.
