UD-18 American Bosch Injector Pump Questions

Recommended Posts

After many years of rebuilding I finally got the UD_18 to cut a few logs on my sawmill.

It ran fine on Diesel in the Spring but will no longer run on Diesel . It starts and runs on gas.

I do not understand the diesel fuel path from the fuel tank and back.

Nor do I know the names or purpose of the different parts that make up the diesel fuel supply system.

That is, the parts bolted on the pump body.

If someone could give me some dialog on how it works it will help me in trouble shooting.

I annotated the attached pix so you can better describe the fuel fitting/connection, etc.

Thanks, Jim

Not sure. If I run on gas and break an injector line I get no flow, but I would think that is normal.

I assume diesel pumping is disabled during gas operation, but I don't know if so or how? Put diesel throttle control to "off" ?

{I understand the carb air by pass system and the two combustion chambers}

Usually you can open the diesel throttle when running on petrol as a way to prime them.  Lots of white smoke when the diesel comes through.

Yes, Thank you.

One exhaust pipe has much heavier volume and darker than the other.

But I'm not looking for perfection.

Been working on this for 6 years and I'm getting tired.

Hope to saw a log next weekend if it doesn't snow.

Just came from looking for an operators manual for the UD-18.

Not sure where to add engine lube oil. Originally put it in dip stick hole.

But think it could go in canister attached to gear box housing that contains

drive shaft for primary pump.

Thanks for your concern and help.

Jim

Yup. I would say that is the filler. I have an 18 project too. It will make yard art.

Oh No, can't do that. What is wrong with it?

I wouldn't mind finding a decent 4 cyl version. But I am a glutton for punishment.

Got water down intake and exhaust. I was under the impression it ran a couple years back. Only to find out later it came out of service in the 60's because it was filling the pan with coolant.
