Is there such a thing as a 4 barrel intake manifold for a 345

Is it necessary to use a 4 barrel intake manifold to get more power from a 345 or is there another way?

I don't know where to find one, but some of the 345 V-8's were equipped with a four barrel carburator. Not sure but same manifold will probably fit 304, 345, and 492 V-8.

Manifolds interchange between the 345 and 392, but will fit a 304 only if you machine a half inch or so off of each side as the 304 (and 266) have a shorter stroke and a shorter block so the V is narrower.

Many 392s came with a 4 barrel intake and they will bolt up to a 345. I have ask this question several times over the years, and I always get the same response: "You will get a little more power and a lot more fuel consumption, so it's not worth the trouble." I bought a 4 barrel intake for my 345, and an Edelbrock 1406, but I never bolted it up. Gotta do head gasket surgery soon, might give it a try.

Another option i've heard of is a new cast aluminum intake. The guys on binder planet made fuel injection work on these motors so they made up a new manifold for multi-port FI. I think they have three stlyes of intakes; two barrel, four barrel spread bore and square bore. So even if you want to run a carburetor yet the new manifolds will work the same as the old cast iron ones. And that way if you couldn't find a cast iron one there is the option to buy a new one. Not sure the price of them but i would think 300 for one. Sure would be easy to take on and off aluminum vs iron.

As for gaining power you may, but all the four barrel will do is give you that throw you back in the seat feel while the gas gauge goes down a little quicker. Even the loadstar trucks that had a 345 still used a two barrel carb. Alot of the power is having the timing down perfect and carb set really good. I once heard few guys with their scouts set the two barrel just right andhelps having a light foot on the gas get around 16-18 in city and around 21 on highway. I've never been that lucky, and my truck is a 3/4 ton pickup not scout, alot more weight to move.

Not familiar with binder planet. Is that on the internet? I have a 1700 Loadstar (restored) and am pulling a 350 bushel wagon at harvest. With an aluminum intake manifold and a different carburetor would I get noticeable power increase. Thanks for the replies.

I don't know how it would work with an International engine, but years ago I put a four barrel Edelbrock manifold and carburetor on a 360 cu. in. FE type Ford engine I had in my F-100 '70 pickup and actually got better milage on normal driving and a lot more power if I wanted to "pour it on"...with not much of an increase in fuel consumption. That and a change of the advance springs in the distributor made a different engine out of the stock "sleepy" 360.
