The American-built 400-series engines went with the truck division.
Case either didn't want to pay for the IH engine, or Navistar wouldn't sell them engines. I believe if IH had continued on, the Magnums would've had intercooled DT466 engines.

IF IH NEVER GOT INVOLVED WITH CASE WOULD THEIR NEW TRACTOR THAT COME OUT BEEN CALLED THE MAGNUM?
the magnums were going to be the 'new farmall' according to ken updike's book.
dirtboyz '5388' is pretty much what it would have looked like if only...

CaseIH bought engines for the combines until 1989 from Navistar.IH sold the ag division to Tenneco in 1985, and kept the truck division.
The American-built 400-series engines went with the truck division.

and Eason is correct. up to the MX magnums, from the flywheel back is all IH. and derived from the 5X88 series. After the MX magnum series, they use the same clutch pack designs. very little IH left in the NEW magnums anymore.
planters and combines are still IH. ...for the most part.
