I pull a 6' Deere model behind our 464 which is ~46 PTO hp. Generally the tractor is fine BUT we have a section of heavy wire grass that will really put a load on the D179 engine especially if we are mulching it.
3' Johnson grass is no problem.
I always run at 1800 RPM in 2 low to get a good cut. In 3 low the tractor is too fast and it will knock things down and not mow well. At PTO speed the tractor has plenty of power but the ground speed is too high for good cutting.
I want to go to a 7' mower because I do some pasture mowing that it would be fine for on the 464.
At the low end I was running a little 17 HP Yanmar and a 4-5' mower. It was fine for general pasture work. I never tried it on the wire grass.
The bottom line is it depends on what you are going to mow.

As for where, where you can get a good buy and you are comfortable buying from. As for what, you might try to find a Bush Hog Squealer. The SQ600 would be a 5'er. I have an SQ720 that I use behind my 574. It has held up well and cuts good. They are more expensive than Howse, King Kutter, etc., but are well built and have some nice features. I sure trust the BH gearboxes a lot more than the cheap ones.
For what its worth, the SQ720 can make a healthy 574 grunt hard in low 2nd in heavy fescue undergrowth.
