I have a buddies 1066 in the shop with a bent 540 shaft and bad bearing and seal. Is it possible to remove the rear PTO housing cover and just replace the 540 shaft, bearing and seals without disassembling the entire PTO? In the exploded view it looks like that the 1000 shaft seal and snap ring could be removed the rear cover would come off leaving the 1000 shaft with the PTO clutch housing and the 540 with the rear cover. I don't think it works that way but my Uncle is argueing with me and I am out to prove him wrong and I want to do the job right the first time. I am almost positive the entire thing needs to be disassembled to make this repair. I rebuilt the PTO on an 806 last fall but I had it completely disassembled and I don't exactly remember what it looked like in there. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yup...what aar said. That 540 shaft is the last thing to come out.

What exactly is keeping that cover from coming off? Just so I know and can tell him exactly why, because he will want to know. It does appear in the IT manual exploded view that it would come off if you removed the 1000 seal and snap ring, but alot of times you can't see everything as it is. Thanks fellers.

Even if it was possible to remove the rear cover there is a snap ring on the 540 shaft that would prevent its removal from the inner housing.. I think you should sneek back into the shop in the evening and just yank the entire PTO unit out and go through the complete assembly properly.

Right, because you're gonna have a heck of a mess on your hands if you try to pull the outer cover off before pulling out the whole assy.

I intend to do it properly. With the exception of clutches. I can't convince my buddy that while I've got it apart that he should install new clutches. O well, its his tractor I reckon.

While you are in there at least inspect the clutches. VERY easy to do, just remove 4 bolts,pull off the hub assembly,remove ONE snapring and the clutches just about jump into your hand. You will never be closer to this simple operation.

you'll have them out anyway to get to the 540 shaft so u will have the visual to show your buddy if they need replaced, just have a new disc there to compare to ;)
