The amount of case hating on here is almost stunning
Just as much as we all gripe about people not knowing how to use a TA properly, theres a lot of ppl that pound the snot out of a powershift too. We have a 970 with if memory serves me getting around 8200 hrs and was never touched that does not give problems, but keeping maintenance up on it, and knowing how to shift it helps. I will admit they are a rough shifting mother, when i shift under full load i do not do so at full throttle, engine has plenty of torque to do so at under half, shift, then throttle to operating rpm. For the speed jump there is between gears, and changing the torque path almost instantaneously at rated rpm with a good load on im sure did not help these transmissions (3 speeds i should say), that and people using them to slow down, rather than using brakes and throttling engine back. We use ours mostly for running the discbine, and have it in the 45 cultivator in the spring, and at least for the pto work i would take it over a similair vintage IH anyday, just for the fact of having a powershift, and being able to reverse directions withough having to stop completely, and grinding into reverse when coming to and end, and i will honestly believe its engine (401) will outlug anything else of similiar horsepower and size. And as Chad said, it fits well, didnt have to spend a fortune to pick it up and honestly does not owe us a penny anymore really paying for itself, yes, it may break down in teh future but most do. so, well, my soapbox time is up
Agree. Guy just as well posted an a KKK site asking opinions of daughter marrying a black guy. Powershift shouldn't be an issue on the 3294 in question. Biggest repair bill I've had is $18.000 on an Major OH and TRASHED powershift on a 4690. Most important part of owning a Case tractor is having a knowledgeable Case Tech for service as Case are simple to work on after you understand what makes them tick.

I would just try to find a low hour 88 series. Mainly because they have the 400 series engines in them. They have alot of torque and power, most parts for that engine are easy to find either at your CIH dealer, and Napa can get almost every part for them. Napa could get parts for a IH 466 alot faster than they could a CASE engine part. The cabs in the 88 series are pretty nice, and the shifting is not as bad as some say. Keep them in good order and they would treat you just fine. As for the MAGNUMS, yeah they are nice BUT all of the MAGNUMS I have seen for sale are WAY over priced. $45,000 for a twenty year old tractor? Come on! I don't care if they are bullet proof they are not worth what most are selling for. An 88 series IH can be had for around $15 to $28,000 depending on model # and condition. The 88 series also has a much better FWA unit than the CASE does. MAGNUMS have almost the exact same FWA unit the later 88 series had. Also some rear end parts on the 52 and 5488 are interchangeable with some MAGNUMS I believe. I would pick a IH 88 series over a CASE any day of the week IMHO.

I n response to the Case lovers and those who have had good service with them....Most of the good ones were well maintained, operated carefully and usually were on the same farm from new or near new purchase. The reason I recommend running from a used Case, especially the high HP high houred ones, is that I have seen many a small farmer buy a Case because it was cheap horsepower and end up with the cost of a decent Magnum in them.

Yeo I have seen plenty of Magnums with new engines and new trannys. A 90 or 94 series Case is like any other tractor it's as good as the care the last owner has given it and that includes a Magnum. I have just got off my dad's 5488 and the 94 series Case is a much better tractor. JMO
