1066 injection pump and over revving

1066 has picked up an odd trait, it will increase the rpm's on it's own and then will drop them back down also. I am assuming since it happens randomly sometimes not at all and other times frequently that it may be dirt related? or possibly a part that is hanging up in the pump? any help would be appreciated thanks for your time
revs go up and down sometimes 600rpm sometimes closer to 1000

There are some friction disks that control your rpm's and they are getting worn out, your pump will need to be gone through. If you need help send me a pm and I can fix it for you or get you a rebuilt.

DONT DELAY GETTING IT FIXED. I had to replace a complete engine in a 1086 that had the same symptoms. He let it go and had a complete engine runaway. Ran really really fast untill #1 rod let loose and went through the side of the block. It hit so hard it actually cracked the internal center webbing!!

Fuel starvation. Have you changed the fuel filters?

If they problem occurs randomly without a change in engine load it is most likely caused by either air in the system are a change in fuel charge pressure due to some obstruction.

If the over speeding occurs when the engine load changes it is almost always caused by slippage of the governor weight assembly in the pump. Normally the first indication of this is when you have the engine under a heavy load and then release the clutch.

Gonzo were you completely unable to shut it down??
I hate to tear it down now as I kinda need it to feed at one farm. It did not happen at all today but was a problem yesterday after the motor warmed up. I am not opposed to pulling the pump off if necessary but with the deep snow I am feeding in I kinda need the old girl.

I used to repair a lot of these pumps when the governor slip clutch let loose and they over reved. It was my understanding that they would only run up to like 3500 rpm or so due to the type of walking beam linkage used in these pumps. I wouldn't bet my life on that though. Saw a lot that waited until they could schedule a repair and a lot of customers who would be scared to even run them into the shop. On the other hand, had an engine run away and threw a rod out side of block knocking injection pump off so therefore it stopped. This was caused by the return check valve coming loose, went back inside inj pump and lodged under control sleeve on plunger. IH had previously issued a letter warning of this possible situation and urged us to change that check valve fitting to later style fixed orfice type. To this day, no injection pump repair facility will let a pump leave the place without the fixed orfice fitting. It is common for a inlet metered injection pump like a roosa master to have rpm fluctuations when starving for fuel but have not seen this happen on the ambac pumps.

This was a customers tractor. His account of it sounded like the minions of **** coming after him. He tried to shut off the fuel to it and couldnt. By the time he got the fuel shut off the turbo had blown a seal and the engine was running one engine oil. Then it got ugly. When the rod broke through the block a ball of fire came out and singed his eyebrows and blew his stocking hat off of his head. The photo I loaded is poor quality but you will see both #1 and 2 rods broke and came through the block. Fuel pump work may not be cheap but the alternative is very expensive.


Interesting side note. This was on a 1086 that was used to run a TMR box at a Dairy here in Washington state.

I'll be alot more scared when I get done laughing. Tractor did not do it at all today either, if some of this snow melts off i can go back to feeding with the smaller equipment hopefully by monday or so.

Very well said Gonzo, $850.00 for a pump won't go very far on a complete motor !!!!! The last one I bought from Case IH was 5800.00 plus labor :wacko:
