A friends 14 we put a the newer style spicer 4wd frontend on won't steer when it gets cold ,normally it sits all winter but now the transfer case is broke on his 766 4wd and we need it on the spreader in the snow. The 14 used to be 2wd from factory ,I've heard rumors of needing to change the mcv or hydraulic pump to a bigger one,or maybe relief in mcv .Anybody had this trouble?? Any help will be greatly appreciated,Thanks Casey

more than likely the problem is mcv pump related or just simply an MCV body that needs gone through. If its not had a new 12 GPM pump installed in while, start there!! That being said if you have the late elwood with the hydraulic engaging transfer it is possible to loose some oil volume and pressure at the transfer case and this could effect things. However, Most were mechanically engaged and had no effect on hydraulic use. Those axles have been mounted on lots of tractors with out changing out the steering hand pump.

The chances are if everything is right on the tractors hydraulic systems that the steering would work no matter which size steering cylinder it has on the front axle. Might be slow but it would move and function. A bigger hand pump might help effort and response but its not a common thing to see done.

We just put a 5088 hand pump on our boom loader tractor because the axle on it has a 3" cylinder. Steers like a JD now but it still requires a lot of rotations to move enough oil.
